“To date, over 4,000 students have been student crew on board Spirit of Bermuda, experiencing expeditionary learning and character-building through sail training. Increased awareness of responsibility and the benefits of teamwork, learning the importance of protecting our marine environment, Bermuda’s maritime history, and gaining self confidence are among the many benefits students receive during their voyages on Spirit.

“Thanks to Bermuda’s generous community of individual and corporate donors, Bermuda Sloop Foundation has now been offering these programmes to Bermuda’s middle school youth for 10 years! Funds raised from this event contribute towards student voyages and bursary funding.
“In this 18th century re-enactment, Mr. John Rankin, Governor of Bermuda, has authorized privateers by Letter of Marque to kidnap community members for their riches.
“The hostages have until Sunday, March 5th, to raise enough ransom to be released [at least $1,500] or they will have to walk the plank. The public can visit www.ptix.bm/pirates or call our office on 737-5667 to donate towards a hostage’s ransom or towards making them actually walk the plank on March 5th.
“This year we are particularly appreciative of all of our hostages, including some wonderful hostages “Teams”. BSF’s programme is delivered at no charge to public middle school students; however our private schools must raise funds or charge students for their school voyages.
“BHS, Saltus, Mount St. Agnes, and Bermuda Institute have hostages or hostage teams this year – 100% of those funds will go towards those schools’ voyages. We are thrilled that America’s Cup Ladies are enthusiastically participating in this event – the men are busy practicing for the big races in June, so the ladies decided, literally, to “jump right in”!.
“Another ladies’ team is representing Women In Shipping and Trade Association [WISTA], recently formed in Bermuda. We wish all hostages and all teams the BEST of luck!!
“All are invited to join the fun at this free event at #1 Car Park in Hamilton on Sunday, March 5th from 2 pm until 5 pm. There will be food vendors, music, entertainment and more throughout the afternoon, and contributions towards SINKING or SAVING hostages may be made right there on the day as well as throughout this month!”
