Hamilton Re Hosts Students During Open House

March 23, 2017

‘Open Hamilton Re’ — a contest designed to raise the interest of Bermuda high school students in a career in the insurance and reinsurance industry — has been hailed as a success by Hamilton Re, the Bermuda-based platform of Hamilton Insurance Group.

Nineteen S3 and S4 level students representing the Island’s public and private high schools were chosen to spend an afternoon in Hamilton Re’s offices in the Waterfront complex on Pitts Bay Road. The event was one of several initiatives organized by Hamilton Re in support of Insurance Careers Month.

The visiting students impressed contest organizers with their responses to the following questions:

  • What are you interested in studying in college?
  • Why are you interested in attending our Open Hamilton Re event?
  • What are you passionate about?

Students were welcomed by Hamilton Re CEO Kathleen Reardon who provided an overview of the type of property and casualty risks her company underwrites.

The young visitors also toured Hamilton Re’s innovative offices, which feature an open plan concept as well as spaces designed to foster creativity and innovation.

Part of the afternoon was spent in the Walking Lounge, where Assistant Vice President Operations & Claims Kelli Nusum conducted her presentation while walking on one of the lounge’s treadmills.

Vice President and Head of Claims Rebecca Adderley challenged the group to identify what might qualify as a claim with a quiz that featured some of the more unusual claims she has dealt with in her career.

Students were also given overviews of the role of data and analytics in selecting risk and the legal aspects of reinsurance.

Hamilton Re’s young visitors said they felt the Open House provided them with useful information.

“As a young person wanting a career in reinsurance, I am grateful for the advice the team provided,” said Warwick Academy student Malini Romeo.

“It was very interesting to hear all about the different skill sets utilized and the options within the sector,” said Bermuda High School student Brianna Mendes.

“Spending time with the Hamilton team was an eye-opening experience that sparked my interest to get into the industry,” said Berkeley Institute student Dakota Lamb.

Open Hamilton Re, which was held on Friday, March 11 from 4:00pm to 5:30pm, was organized by Junior Reinsurance Analyst Zuri Phillip, Assistant Underwriter Sarah Summersgill and Assistant Underwriter Ebony Brockington.
