Volunteers Needed For Tall Ships Regatta

March 23, 2017

Volunteers are needed to help make Bermuda shine when crews and trainees arrive for the Rendez-Vous 2017 Tall Ships Regatta.

“Nineteen tall ships with approximately 1,100 crew have so far signed up to take part in the Regatta, a 7,000 nautical mile Trans-Atlantic race to six countries to mark the 150th Anniversary of the Canadian Confederation,” the organisers said.

“Ships will be arriving in St George’s between May 26 and 31 and will then move to Hamilton for June 1 to June 5.”

Craig Nikolai Project Management, Tall Ships Bermuda 2017 said: “Like an awful lot of events, we are relying on volunteers to help make sure this is a resounding success.

“It is a great opportunity to join the fun and be up close to the Tall Ships fleet, their crews and trainees and to help make Bermuda shine as we show them what Bermudian hospitality is all about.

“We need whatever help and support you can provide so our fleet, captains, crew and trainees are all well supported during their brief visit.”

Dr Nikolai added: “We are asking volunteers to commit to a minimum of two four-hour shifts during the event.

“Volunteers are needed to man information desks and the crew centre, assist with retail sales, provide gate monitoring at trainee events and to provide setup and clean up assistance at trainee events and to provide either land or sea transport.

“In addition, those who would really like to get to know a ship, her Captain and crew, can volunteer to be a Liaison Officer. Liaison Officers require at least a three-day commitment.”

As well as volunteers, there are still spaces available to people who want to be trainees on board the ships.

Trainees must be aged 16 and up, and bursaries of up to 75 percent of the total cost are available for those demonstrating financial need and who are aged between 16 and 25.

Anyone interested in volunteering should email volunteer@tallships.bm. If you are interested in being a trainee onboard a Tall Ship, email trainee@tallships.bm. Or, call 296-2238.
