Football & Traditions Merge At Triangle Cup
Sixty-five youth football players and their families are in Bermuda this weekend for the second annual Bermuda Triangle Cup, sponsored by the Bermuda Tourism Authority.
This year’s tournament takes place during Easter Weekend, exposing visitors to Bermuda cultural traditions like fish cakes, kite flying and Gombeys.
Organisers plan to include a Gombey performance in the opening ceremony and will encourage visitors to attend Good Friday celebrations at Horseshoe Bay or St. David’s Cricket Club. The competition runs April 13th to 15th, 2017.
“We love the way the Bermuda Triangle Cup has woven together sport and culture,” said Pat Phillip-Fairn, chief product and experiences development officer for the Bermuda Tourism Authority.
“Culture and the Bermudian spirit of hospitality are what win the hearts of visitors and these attributes keep them coming back again and again. The Bermuda Tourism Authority is pleased to support the Bermuda Triangle Cup for the second consecutive year and we welcome the tournament’s visitors for an equal dose of football and island life traditions.”
Bermudians Dennis Brown, Brian Martin and Cal Blankendal worked their contacts in the U.S. and at Bermuda’s Brazilian Football School to make the Triangle Cup a reality. Under-14 girl players and boys under-14 and under-10 are competing this weekend at the National Sports Centre. Bermudian youth players will join in on the action as well.
Mr Martin, who is based in Maryland, said: “It’s a great opportunity for the kids from the United States along with the kids from the island to see different talent and get international experience.
“This July will be the third annual Bermuda Brazilian Soccer Camp held in Maryland. A contingency of coaches and players, led by Cal Blankendal and Dennis Brown, will travel to the United States to host a week-long skills camp for over 250 kids. We are very excited to have the guys back again to help teach the game to our youth.”
