Four People Rescued From Capsized Whaler
On Saturday [Aug 19] multiple distress flare sightings were reported indicating a vessel in difficulty off Cambridge Beaches, and four people were found in the water, clinging onto a capsized rental whaler.
A Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre spokesperson said, “Multiple Distress flare sightings were reported to the Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre and Marine Police indicating a vessel in difficulty off Cambridge Beaches.
“Marine police vessel ‘Heron 2’, and private craft Attitude Adjustment and Ocean Gypsy 2 also reported similar sightings with all vessels tasked to the Distress position. Upon arrival, Attitude Adjustment discovered four persons in the water, clinging onto a capsized rental whaler.
“All persons were taken onboard with no reported injuries. Heron 2 also attended on scene, ensuring that all survivors were in good condition, later reporting that the Rental Operator had since taken his vessel under tow back to Dockyard.
“This incident highlights the need for carrying Distress flares onboard as a means of alerting other boaters / authorities ashore of your Distress situation. Follow-up investigations by Marine Police are ongoing.”
