Photos & Video: BFRS Firefighter Of Year

On Friday, the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service held a special event to honor the Firefighter of the Year in memory of William Eugene Glasford, an ex Firefighter who passed away in 1997.

The award was created by his family [wife - Delores Glasford, daughter - Dionne Glasford and son - William "Billy" Glasford, who is also a Firefighter] in 1998 to encourage Firefighters to uphold the standard that Mr. Glasford presented whilst working at the Fire Service.

In attendance to the ceremony was the Minister of National Security Wayne Caines members of the Glasford family, members of the award recipients family and the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service family.

The recipient for the award for 2017 was Firefighter Lionel C. Furbert, a 21 year veteran of the Fire Service who was surprised, honored and humbled when his name was officially announced as the winner.

The community embraced the opportunity to express thanks to the Firefighter of the Year by donating a number of awards as listed below:

  • Marketplace – $200 shopping voucher

  • Belmont Hills Golf Club – Round of golf for 4
  • Fire Service Association and the Glasford Family – $700 travel voucher

“The Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service would like to express thanks to the companies and individuals for their generous donations and would also like to thank Abberfeldy Nurseries and Frameworks for their donations to ensure the event was a success,” a spokesperson said.
