WIA Raises $140,000 For Hurricane Relief
The West Indian Association of Bermuda have raised just over $140,000 for the Caribbean Hurricane Relief Campaign, and will be hosting their final fundraising event under this Campaign at this stage, a takeout lunch, on January 27th.
A spokesperson said, “The WIA [Bermuda] wishes to again thank all those individuals, the Government of Bermuda, organizations, and agencies who have made donations, volunteered or otherwise contributed to the success of our fund raising initiatives under our signature Campaign initiative “the Caribbean Hurricane Relief Campaign” to provide funds to countries most affected by the devastating Hurricanes Irma and Jose.
“We launched our campaign in September 2017 and have organized and hosted several fundraising events such as: -
- “Caribbean Summer Cruise – Saturday September 23rd, 2017
- “Give From The Heart Telethon – Thursday October 12th, 2017
- “Family Fun Day – Sunday November 5th, 2017
“We were also most grateful to be the recipients of the proceeds of fundraisers held by others in our community, most notably, the Government of Bermuda [a Denim Day held on 6th October 2017] and a group of Dominicans on island [a car wash and an art sale in November 2017]. We have raised a total of $140,617.52 from our events, and individual and community donations and fundraisers.
“As indicated at our press conference last September, the process of rebuilding communities within the countries most affected will take years.
“We have therefore continued to monitor and gather information as to the needs of those who have been affected and the recovery efforts underway so as to determine priority needs and how best we might assist the humanitarian and rebuilding efforts going on in these countries.
“We have identified projects in Dominica, Barbuda and British Virgin Islands which we wish to assist with funds raised and are presently in communication with the relevant stakeholders. The projects are as follows:-
- “Housing reconstruction and repair projects in Dominica and BVI [CDEMA, Adopt a Roof]
- “Children’s projects in Dominica and BVI [East Dominica Children’s Federation, West Dominica Children’s Federation, CDEMA]
- “Financial Assistance to offset living expenses for Barbudians displaced by Hurricane Irma who have temporarily relocated to Antigua [CDEMA].
“We will host our final fundraising event under this Campaign at this stage, a takeout lunch entitled Caribbean Fusion 2 Go on Saturday 27th January 2018 at the Cathedral Hall on Church Street between the hours of 11.30am to 2.00pm. Tickets are only $20.00 each.
“We thank you very much for your continued support,” the Association added.
