73 Racers Take Part In Mountain Bike Race
The sixth race of the 2017-2018 Furniture Walk Mountain Bike Race Series presented by Gubinelli Mendoza Wines, Arch Insurance & Becks Beer took place on Sunday morning [Feb 4] at Fort Scaur Public Park.
73 racers braved the cooler, cloudy weather and tough climbs that the Scaur course has become infamous for. Course designers had pity on the group with several switchbacks incorporated into the first climb up to the water catch. A reasonable B line switchback was also added to the second part of the dreaded gravel climb.
Charles Swart made a shrewd choice to enter A class again and was uncontested being the sole competitor. Hans Hirschi again led the charge in Vets class holding off a field of nine riders for the win. Andrew Hern placed second and guest racer Kent Richardson got third place.
13 to 15 and 12 and under classes were dominated by the Smith Brothers, Manning and Gordon. Shawn Bremar and Cameron Morris battled with Manning in 13 to 15 but by lap three they had settled into second and third respectively and held those positions at the finish. Yann Pugi led the first lap for the 12 and unders but eventually, Rory Fleming won second place with Milo Dasilveira coming third.
