Duffy Seeking Medal At Commonwealth Games

April 4, 2018

The official website of the Commonwealth Games has highlighted Bermuda’s Flora Duffy, with the world champion triathlete considered to be a serious medal contender at these Games

The story said, “For two-time world triathlon champion Flora Duffy, adding a Commonwealth Games medal to her burgeoning trophy cabinet would have special significance.

“The world No.1 is one of two athletes at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games to have competed at the Melbourne 2006 and Glasgow 2014 triathlon events [the other being New Zealand’s Andrea Hewitt, both times finishing eighth.

“However, after winning six out of seven races in last year’s World Triathlon Series, 30-year-old Duffy repeated her 2016 world championship success and is confident of finally claiming a Commonwealth Games medal.

“It would be very special to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games,” Duffy said. “I did my first Commonwealth Games in 2006 when I was 18 and it was actually my first international level race and very scary and daunting for me.

“Now it’s cool to come full circle and be a favourite to win the gold medal. Bermuda doesn’t have many medals, so to add to that tally would be very special and I would really like to perform well on Thursday. If I finish eighth again I will be super disappointed.”

Bermuda is fielding an 8-strong team at the Games, with Tyler Butterfield, Tre Houston, Tyrone Smith, Kyle Webb, Flora Duffy, Micah Franklin, Erica Hawley and Tyler Smith all representing the island.
