Tragedy In Toronto: Ten Dead After Van Attack
[Written by Don Burgess]
The co-owner of Edgehill Manor was driving along Yonge Street in Toronto just minutes before a man killed ten people, and injured 14 others with his van as it smashed its way down a busy sidewalk.
Chris Morris told Bernews he left his mother-in-laws place to take a trip on the 401 Freeway.
“At 1:30 the guy went careening down Yonge Street so he must have been behind me, but I didn’t see or hear anything. The traffic that I was in had nothing to do with him. It had to do with lane closures and normal for Toronto,” he said.
Mr Morris said it was gorgeous outside, so many people were out on the sidewalks enjoying the warm weather.
“It was a beautiful day,” said Mr Morris. “Toronto got hammered with really bad weather last week, and I’m still looking at little bits of snow around here. It was like 20-21 [68-70 Fahrenheit] degrees. It was a beautiful sunny day, so everyone was out. People were out there eating lunch.
The beginning of the tragedy occurred near the corners of Yonge St and Finch Avenue and lasted just under than 1,500 metres ending near Mel Lastman Square, a popular public park.
Mr Morris said he didn’t find out about the tragedy until he tried to return to his mother-in-law.
“I was in absolute shock. I was driving back, and when I tried to make the left turn to go west towards Yonge St., I saw yellow tape across each road. I went a little further south, and there was more yellow tape. I wondered ‘What’s going on here?’ Then I heard helicopters and sirens. I thought ‘Oh, my God. Something really serious is happening here.’
Alek Minassian, 25, appeared in court on Tuesday and was charged with ten counts of first-degree murder and 13 counts of attempted first-degree murder.
