[Updated with video] The American Society of Bermuda hosted an event at the Victualling Yard in Dockyard on Saturday [July 7] to mark American Independence Day. More commonly known as the fourth of July, the U.S holiday commemorates the United States gaining independence from Great Britain in 1776.

The event saw recently appointed U.S. Consul General Constance Dierman offer some remarks, along with food, drinks, snacks, and entertainment.

A spokesperson said, “This event was sponsored by the American Society of Bermuda in celebration of the 242nd. Anniversary of the Independence of the United States.

“The US Consul General Constance Dierman spoke on behalf of the United States highlighting the historical ties between the United states and Bermuda.

“The event was attended by a cross section of the community who enjoyed a family style picnic and with music, entertainment and capped off by a fantastic performance by the Fire Dancers.”

The group’s website says, “In 1961, believing that it would be beneficial for United States citizens in Bermuda to get together from time to time, The American Society was organized by the late Col. F. Van Wyck Mason and a small group with the encouragement of the American Consulate.”
