OBA Leadership Elections Set For October 12th

September 26, 2018

The One Bermuda Alliance will hold their elections on October 12th, with the election to formally decide the positions of OBA Leader and OBA Chairperson.

This is according to an email sent to OBA members, which states that the position of OBA Leader is open to OBA MPs, while the “position of OBA Chair is open to any OBA Member.”

The election will follow after the changes within the OBA over the past week, which includes the resignation of Jeanne Atherden as OBA Leader and the resignation of Justin Mathias as OBA Chairperson.

Leah Scott is currently serving as the Acting OBA Leader, Nandi Outerbridge is serving as the Acting OBA Chairperson and Craig Cannonier — who is seen by many as the likely winner of the upcoming OBA Leader election — has already been sworn in as Opposition Leader, as while they are generally regarded as the same thing, the OBA Leader and Opposition Leader are not, technically speaking, exactly the same thing, as the OBA leader is selected by the party, while the Opposition Leader is officially appointed by the Governor.

“The position of OBA Leader is open to OBA MPs. The position of OBA Chair is open to any OBA Member.

“Nomination forms are available from the OBA HQ or by contacting the Party Secretary via email at office@oba.bm

  1. Cha says:

Honestly who cares? The OBA have done nothing as an opposition will a new leader change that? Maybe we can hope so?

    • PBanks says:

None of it matters to the general public but as one of the two parties they have to put the info out there.

  2. coup d'état says:

Why bother with the election when “less than transparent” Craig has already pulled off his coup d’état and now has his sights on Dunkley, Moniz, Pamplin, Atherdon etc.

I used to be a believer in this group, but all they do now is COLECTIVELY leave a bad taste in my mouth and a foul smell in the air.

The 8 MP’s who supported “less than transparent” , “I will tell everything” Craig Cannonier, should all hold their heads in shame and all resign so that we may get honorable people in the opposition.

Wow! How convenient now to TALK about spilling the beans. This man is taking you all on another ride, not on a private jet, but on a river called “de Nile” . You eight are clinging to his coat tails and will all be politically irrelevant soon.

    • Real Talk says:

As Jim Woolrridge said in his book and I will never forget his words “those little white boys don’t mind you being in charge as long as they can tell you what to do – “The House That Jack Built” by the Hon. C.V. (Jim) Woolridge.

SORRY BUT YOUR NOT TELLING OPPOSITION CANNONIER WHAT TO DO ANYMORE! HE IS IN TOUCH WITH THE PEOPLE AND SO ARE HIS OTHER 7 OBA MP THAT VOTED FOR CHANGE! IN ORDER TO WIN YOU MUST GET RID OF THE WEAK LINKS OF THE UBP.

      MICHEAL DUNKELY
      PATRICIA GORDON-PAMPLIN
      TREVOR MONIZ
      MICHAEL FAHY
      COLE SIMONS

      ALL MUST GO!!

      • Onion Juice says:

He is still gonna be told what to do, according to de secret Surrogate letter.

      • PBanks says:

Wouldn’t Atherden herself fall into that category?

      • question says:

If all ex-UBP people must go, that by definition would have to include Wayne Furbert, Jamahl Simmons and Kim Swan.
When is the PLP getting rid of them?

        • Onion Juice says:

          They got converted.
          Like Saul became Paul.

          • question says:

They’re ex-UBP. They have to go. When is the PLP getting rid of them?

        • Wake up Bie says:

They were smart enough to see the stanch coming from the UBP. Years later Craig and party are seeing the same stanch thus the reason he has taken over.

          • Jus' Wonderin' says:

Nah bra they just wanted d gravy train to keep going….only reason!

          • question says:

If they’re sensitive to ‘stanch’(ffs learn to spell) they must have been holding their noses when anywhere near Zane and Burt.

If they’re UBP they have to go. That’s what all you PLP people have been saying. So when is the PLP going to get rid of the old guard UBP?
Otherwise we all know the PLP is just the UBP in disguise.

      • TO REAL TALK:
        100% RIGHT.
        heeheeheehee!
        Dunkley, Simons,Moniz,Fahy,Pamplin.
        Yes!! Yes!!

        • question says:

UBP Furbert, UBP Simmons, UBP Swan. When is the PLP getting rid of them? heeheeheehee! yes!! yes!!

      • Paul says:

who will replace them ? these five have the experience and brains to keep the OBA,viable…the rest of the OBA members of Parliament you never hear from them !!!

  3. Justin says:

It all comes down to the basic problem that nobody in the former OBA government stood up to the PLP over Jetgate but instead fed Craig to the Wolves – allowing Dunkley and pals to take over. Bottom line is that Michael has always been a covetous sort that average folks see straight through – as reflected by his two calamitous election results leading two so-called different parties. If Cannonier does this right and the PLP Government screw up, especially the economy, he might just pull it off again.

    • Bye bye bye says:

You are 100% right about Dunkely!

Just tell us where the money went Cannonier and you can run the party!

    • Retro says:

How could anyone in the OBA defend jetgate? People make it sound as though Cannonier was clubbed on his head and then woke up on a wealthy casino developers private jet . I agree that the UBP affiliation makes the OBA unelectable but you can’t absolve Cannonier of his mistakes just because strong anti UBP sentiment exists. If you want good leaders ,on either side , make them accountable rather than forgetting their pasts or even ,in your case, rewriting his past.

      • Phillip Wells says:

The OBA won an election in 2012 despite their “UBP affiliation”. It does not make them unelectable.

Getting rid of anyone with any connection with the UBP will make no difference to the way the party is viewed by the PLP and their supporters, or their chances of re-election. It may even reduce those chances. Certainly with Craig Cannonier at the helm, I am even less likely to vote OBA than I was in the last election (even then, I voted for an independent candidate). At best, he was arrogant (his comment “that’s how you treat the media!” still sticks in my mind) and showed poor judgment when he was last in charge, and it boggles my mind that the party wants him to lead them again.

Bermuda needs a strong opposition. Unfortunately, although the opposition was weak even before this fiasco, this has only made it worse.

        • Retro says:

I am not sure I agree with you. I think the PLP would be a lost without the UBP. I can’t remember a time when the PLP haven’t used the “old days” formula. As for winning in 2012 . It was a narrow win with a low voter turnout during a very bad recession with a non UBP leader. Context is everything. I personally think the remaining UBP members still do have something to offer but the prevailing perception of them doesn’t believe this. Not fair but it is what it is.

    • Come Correct says:

      Hypocrite ALERT!!

For months and weeks Justine has been kissing up to Mr. Dunkely. Now Justin throws the man off the cliff to make Craig look good. When PLP members screw up we stand strong with them forgive and forget.

No man is perfect…. Ex titty milk!!

However you Justin and people that think like you are the very reason people like me will not vote UBP or OBA again.

  4. Sister Nancy says:

The nerve of you Retro why don’t you ask your party peeps where the missing 800 million is. You are worrying about Jet Gate please look in your own backyard. OBA can never or will never run this island to the ground as Brown and friends did. Wake up and pay attention.

    • Retro says:

Lol! Well, the 800 million is not in my backyard if that’s what you are insinuating and I’m definitely no fan of the PLP . I just want Bermuda to politically mature and sometimes that means criticizing the party that you voted for. Try it.

  5. drunken ursula says:

Clueless Nandi for leader….OBA cant get any worst !

    • Blankerchief says:

Your grammar can’t get any WORSE. You are correct though, but I’m not sure why you’re happy about that.
