BFRS Firefighter Wellness Volleyball Tournament

February 9, 2019

The Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service [BFRS] hosted it’s 2nd Annual Firefighter Wellness Volleyball Tournament recently at the Hamilton Fire Station. The tournament was created as a way to relieve some of the stress and anxiety that comes with the job.

Public Safety Education Officer Gavin Carter said, “The responsibilities of a firefighter are extremely stressful. Dealing with uncertainty, death and tragedy on the job can certainly take its toll. Finding positive ways to alleviate that stress can be a challenge for some. One of the goals of the tournament is to allow the firefighters to connect to each other in a non emergency environment.

“Off duty firefighters, Airport Operations Division, emergency medical dispatchers, administrative staff, mechanical engineering department and even some of the firefighters that have retired, were invited to come out and show their skills on the volleyball court.

“The highlight of the tournament this year was that the Minister of National Security Wayne Caines and his intern Brandon Sousa graced the court with their volleyball prowess.”

Chief Fire Officer Burchall said “to have the support of the Ministry in understanding some of the emotional strain that we encounter and to participate in positive avenues to combat stress is a huge motivator.”
