Somersfield Academy Senior Debate Champions
Somersfield Academy’s secondary students recently represented the school at the annual International Public Speaking and Debate tournament, held from March 21 to March 23 at Bermuda High School.
A spokesperson said, “With many first-time public speakers/debate members, as well as seasoned veterans taking part, the Stars shone brightly, displaying their risk-taking skills and overall oratory prowess – a formative experience full of essential life skills.”
Brice Pursell, the Debate Teacher, said, “In an amazing display of teamwork, perseverance, and serious oratory skills, it is with great pleasure that we announce that Somersfield Academy’s Senior Debate team of Gregg Mwangi, Samara Silvia, and Kate Tobin earned first place overall in Saturday’s all-day debate.”
“Somersfield Academy students were up against students from BHS, Saltus Grammar School, Warwick Academy, Berkeley Institute and Gray Academy from Winnipeg in the middle school division.”
Mr. Pursell said, “After a tremendous amount of preparation and collaboration the team won all three debates, and then in an exciting final round went above and beyond to capture the title – truly impressive. The three students clearly have bright futures in all public speaking/debate endeavors – congratulations again Team Somersfield.”

- M4 Ethan Madeiros- Public Speaking persuasive [2nd place overall]
- M5 Kate Tobin- 5th place individual top speaker Debate

Charlie Judd, Secondary Division Head said, “The students have displayed some very impressive results which is a testament to their hard work and preparation. Each of the students brought their own unique skill set to the team and they worked well under pressure to produce a fantastic result. We are proud of their accomplishments and how well they have represented the school.”
