Premier David Burt’s Bermuda Day Message

May 24, 2019

PREMIER_BURT david bermuda 2019[Bermuda Day message from Premier David Burt]

The highlight of the Spring calendar is Bermuda Day. For some it remains the official start of the summer and culminates in that first jump overboard. Bermudians have united around traditions of the Day that include the Half-marathon and of course the colourful parade in Hamilton. At the heart of our diverse cultural backgrounds is the unity this day should bring. Bermuda Day can be more than the events and celebrations, it can inspire us to take pride in our Island home and to celebrate what we do well while committing to working together to make things better for the very same children who we applaud running, cycling or marching on Bermuda Day.

Led by the immaculate Band and Corps of Drums of the Royal Bermuda Regiment and the exciting, rhythmic beat of our Gombeys, this year we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Bermuda Day Parade. The 2019 theme, Bermudian Excellence speaks to the tremendous talent that we have in Bermuda. From the outstanding craftsmanship displayed in our floats, to the extraordinary energy of the performers and the dedication of the many spectators who spend the entire day enthusiastically cheering on marathon runners and parade participants.

This year’s Honorees reflect that Bermudian excellence. These men and women demonstrate the best of Bermuda and their enormous personal sacrifices are testaments to who we are as Bermudians. As we salute them, their diverse paths in life have been marked by international acclaim but Bermuda has always been in their hearts.

I am a great fan of Bermuda Day and look forward to watching the parade and the runners; mingling on the sidewalks with the community of spectators, and enjoying the warm and genuine hospitality that is abundant wherever I visit. May 24th is a special occasion for Bermuda, and my family and I look forward to being a part of this wonderful tribute to our heritage.

On behalf of the Government of Bermuda, I wish everyone a Happy Bermuda Day. Have a happy and safe holiday.

  2. Richard A says:

Thanks for increasing the cost to live on this island. My May 24th message to you is RESIGN!

    • Parade says:

Oh and allow Jet Gate Craig to be in charge again. You have to be desperate, dumb and stupid to allow him to lead you from a 25 to 11 vote. I say desperation.

      • Question says:

Jetgate had no impact whatsoever on you, me, or anyone else. Get over it.

      • Richard A says:

Who said anything about OBA taking power? Typical PLP supporter assuming everything.

    • Concerned Bermudian says:

      Hear hear!!!

  3. Sandgrownan says:

Bermudian excellence? I was hoping for some contrition and perhaps a resignation. Did he see the retail figures? Does he know Arbitrade didn’t actually have that gold?

    • Lol says:

Resign for what? You act like the govt controls what ppl do with their money and how they spend it. The retail sales have been continued the downward trend. The only time it was up was when the America’s Cup was on the island and that was a short period of time. I challenge you to look at the figures before and you see no difference now. And Arbitrade really? Did we invest any money in them? Did we grant them any licenses? The only thing with Arbitrade is that they purchased a piece of real estate that was not in use which brought the island revenue. You mention Arbitrade but just like the rest of you OBA lot you don’t mention nothing about Binance or their sister company who hired a Bermudian as their CFO!!. Nor you all fail to mention the other 31 companies who have registered here and have been expressing not to just Bermuda but the rest of the world their intentions of doing business here in the near future. Why don’t you actually do some research into these other Fintech companies and cut the crap. The fact remains the OBA when they were the govt were a complete FAILURE. The failed on their 2000 job promised, they did NOT grown the economy which is why we had a further 1800 jobs that went under them, they did not tackle the DEBT actually it INCREASED under them by DOUBLE. They did not stop the shootings neither like they promised. All the things I listed is the things they promised the ppl who voted them in and they failed and out right LIED on some of the points. You don’t lose an election by the margin they did for absolutely nothing. The govt did not increase the cost of living. Pretty much most of the changes they made the OBA was about to do the same or it was suggested in the SAGE report. You ppl and your nonsensical arguments make us all laugh and cringe at the same time of hoe blatantly bias and downright racist you all are. Craig Cannonire sat up for over a year and a half and LIED to the faces of Bermuda, the first and only premier in our political history to resign in disgrace, but you all accept him as your leader..so so funny and sad at the same time

Capitalization of words to make a point is no way to go through life son.

I really don’t have the energy to refute each point one by one, but shouting doesn’t make them true. The fact remains, that while the OBA were politically inept, they did more in four short years to right the fiscal ship they inherited from the PLP.

And since the 2017 election, Bermuda has returned to its downward economic trajectory.

        • Ringmaster says:

Craig Cannonier resigned because he was mislead by two lawyers, one the AG. At least he did the right thing unlike another Premier who admitted what he did in office was unethical but not illegal. Then went on to be rewarded by the PLP for $1.2m.
The OBA should have fired about 2,000 Civil Servants hired by the PLP to avoid raising the debt, but didn’t. Big mistake. The Financial Support would have been far less a cost.
Soon the debt will rise again 2 years after the election. How will the PLP propaganda machine spin that?

      • Question says:

Debt did not double under the OBA. It did however increase by 6x under the PLP. Just sayin’.

      • kevin says:

you my friend are the real meaning of sold – lot stock and barrel you actually believe what you wrote …the truth my friend is what you don’t want to admit …this government and every plp government are short on initiatives and just plain smarts to get us out of a hole they dug yes the very hole they dug …one day you will … not to me but to your children and their children when they ask why …why are we struggling …..education …healthcare … the best thing the plp can do is resign they are clueless and its proven every week

  4. Clueless Amareur Clowns says:

Bermuda Day News brought to you by the PLP:

-Retail sales down 12 months in a row
-Health insurance is going up across the board for Bermudians
-Arbitrade, Burt’s Fintech wonder child, is a scam and now own Bermuda real estate

25-11. The gift that keeps on costing.

  5. Madge says:

Where is sir John when we need him ? the present leader and opposition leader do not have a clue to whats going on.

  7. Concerned Bermudian says:

    Vote NO CONFIDENCE PLP

    • wahoo says:

Where is the polling station I will vote no confidence in them AGAIN!

  8. Question says:

So where is your explanation for your Arbitrade debacle?

  9. Dready says:

We want jobs, not talk from the PLP. You said health costs will come down, they have gone up. We want jobs not talk. Get people in here so we can get work!
