Successful Community Clean Up At Southlands

Attorney General Kathy Lynn Simmons and Minister for Public Works Lt. Col. David Burch extended their thanks to the diverse group of community volunteers, the Regiment, Mirrors and Department of Parks staff that came out and gave their time to clean-up the Southlands property in Warwick on Saturday, June 29th.

The event was the first of 5 scheduled community clean ups planned over the summer and fall of 2019. The Regiment made up approximately half the team and gave the added boost of work power for the day.

The Attorney-General said, “The volunteers are very much appreciated for supporting this joint initiative. The focus of our community coming together to preserve the park in such a way that demonstrates community building and community renewal is something that Mirrors promotes and will bode well for the entire island.” She further stated, “The character of cooperation will go a long way to affect society as a whole”.

Lt Col Burch said, “I am pleased to see the success of the two departments, the Regiment and members of the community working together. The teams had a laser focus on Saturday as they removed debris, pulled invasive vines and trees to preserve our ecological heritage”.

He added, “The Acting Parks Director, Mr. Craig Burt, used the opportunity to train 2 volunteers on the use of chain saw as they plan to attend all 5 of the scheduled events”.

Further clean up dates are July 20th, August 17th, September 21st, and November 2nd 2019. Clean up s will begin at 9:00 am and finish at 2:00 pm.
