The Scotsman Praises Mary Prince Play

August 22, 2019

The Scotsman, Scotland’s national newspaper, has praised British actress Amantha Edmead for “bringing empathy and energy” to the role of Mary Prince in her new show about the Bermudian trailblazer now being staged in Edinburgh.

Ms Edmead wrote and stars in Sold!, based on the life of the Bermudian abolitionist.

The production premiered in Oxford earlier this year and is now running at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival of the performing arts until August 25.

Sold! had already received a rave from Deborah Klayman writing at Britain’s Reviews Hub website. She called the production at Edinburgh’s Pleasance Courtyard theatre “a bold, urgent piece of theatre.”

Bermudian writer Elizabeth Jones, now in Scotland promoting her recently published young adult novel A Dark Iris at The Edinburgh International Book Festival, had an opportunity to see the show and to meet Ms Edmead after the performance.

Mrs. Jones said the British TV and stage actress “brilliantly performed” the role of Mary Prince.
