Ministry On Conditions At West End Primary
The Ministry of Education provided an “update on speculations” on the conditions at West End Primary School, saying that “abatement work is being done only as a precautionary measure.”
A spokesperson said, “The Ministry can confirm the following:
- “On Wednesday, 4 September, a visual inspection was conducted at West End Primary. During this inspection it was determined that some tiles appeared to be coming up from the floor in a store room.
- “On Thursday, 5 September The Health Department and Bermuda Water Service visited West End, and after some discussion it was decided that the best course of action was to remove the tiles in question in case they contained asbestos. Air samples were also taken. All works and samples collected were carried out due to the visual inspection findings.
- “The tiles in question were removed and the floor was encapsulated, removing all possibility of asbestos being present. This work was completed Friday, 6 September.
- “Ceramic tile is scheduled to be laid tomorrow, 7 September, and air samples sent overseas as per the standard protocol.
“It should be noted that this abatement work is being done only as a precautionary measure and is solely based on visual inspection.
“The Ministry of Education and Department are confident that West End Primary School will be safe to receive students and staff on Tuesday, 10 September. Parents and staff will be formally notified on Monday, 9 September.”
