Child Pedestrian Struck By Electric Pedal Cyclist

October 2, 2019

A 12-year-old pedestrian was transported to hospital via ambulance Tuesday evening [Oct 1] after being struck by an electric pedal cyclist in Sandys. According to police, the man that was riding the electric pedal cycle then left the scene with the assistance of another man on a motorcycle.

A police spokesperson said, “Around 5:25pm Tuesday, October 1st police and ambulance personnel were dispatched to a reported collision on Clyde Best Lane in Sandys parish near the junction with Cricket Lane.

“It appears that a 12-year-old girl was walking along Clyde Best Lane when she was struck by a black male on a black electric pedal cycle traveling in the same direction.

“Both the 12-year-old girl and the male electric pedal cyclist – believed to be in his 30s – were injured.

“Apparently the male that was riding the electric pedal cycle then left the scene with the assistance of another male on a motorcycle, leaving the electric pedal cycle behind.

“However, a third male is said to have arrived a short time later and removed the electric pedal cycle involved in the collision, fleeing the scene on foot towards the former Arnold’s Supermarket.

“The 12 year old girl was transported to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance for treatment of her injuries, which are not thought to be life threatening.

“The scene was processed and inquiries continue.

“Any witnesses that have not already come forward are encouraged to call the main police telephone number 295-0011 as soon as possible.”

Shouldn’t these electric cycles be licensed as auxiliary cycles?

COWARD,COWARD!! Own up to what you do. What if that were your sister or daughter.

Disgusting! To leave a hurt 12 year old girl in the street. What the hell is wrong with people today?

  4. Toodle-oo says:

This incident will no doubt be responsible for the ending of no registration/licensing requirements for these electric bikes . Something that will undoubtedly annoy the responsible users .
A speedy recovery to the unfortunate victim .

What a sad day for Bermuda when a “Hit and Run” involves a child and the culprit flees the scene. It was an accident, but his behaviour makes me wonder if the electric pedal cycle was stolen or that the three men were involved in some sort of criminal activity. Why else would he/ they flee? I hope the child makes a full recovery.

    Three males…not one o’em a man!

  7. Howie says:

I’ve been wondering about the requirements to be able to ride one on the roads. I don’t see how it can be just categorized as a pedal bike. This is an unfortunate and sad example of why not.

This will undoubtedly be yet another case of the few ruining it for the many. For people who have been around long enough to recall just like the banning of Guy Fawkes night in Bermuda.
As far as the road certification for these things go , I’ve always wondered too why gov’t didn’t get their hands on regulations for them from the beginning.
These things can , in most cases , easily keep up with traffic that’s doing 50k
But , on a side note, what makes this even worse is that 2 other guys came to the ‘aid’ of the perp and helped spirit him away.
