MindFrame PhotoVoice Exhibition Opens Tonight
The MindFrame PhotoVoice Exhibition opens tonight [Oct 4] from 5.00pm to 7.00pm at the Bermuda Society of Arts.
A spokesperson said, “The MindFrame PhotoVoice Exhibition opens tonight, Friday, October 4, at the Bermuda Society of Arts from 5.00pm to 7.00pm. The exhibition is in its 13th year, and includes art and photography by people who use services from the Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute [MWI]. Services include mental health, intellectual disability and substance abuse.
“Art and photography therapies are used at MWI for a variety of purposes depending on the individual and their needs. The exhibition is an opportunity for services users to connect with the community and tell the stories of their lives.”
“Chevon Burrows doesn’t just use intellectual disability services at MWI. As President of the Intellectual Disability Service Users’ Council, he helps problem solve issues, and he also works making bouquet covers at MWI for Demco, the Hamilton-based florist.
“But it’s not all work. Alongside many activities supported by MWI’s Allied Health team in intellectual disabilities, the PhotoVoice programme that runs annually is an opportunity for Chevon to get out and enjoy Bermuda.
Mr. Burrows said, “I enjoy the outings most of all. This year we went to St George’s where I saw the ferry – which was huge. I took a picture of the captain of that boat.”
The spokesperson said, “Chevon was part of the group who came up with the idea for the intellectual disability PhotoVoice group to focus on nature.”
Mr. Burrows said, “I really enjoy coming up with the theme. They really get me to think hard about it.”
Regarding his photos with a water theme, Mr. Burrows said, “I love the water. I love swimming.
“My photos include pictures of the fish which were swarming together, water going through rocks and people on jet skis.”
The spokesperson said, “The PhotoVoice programme has service users taking photos, exploring the world without words, then adding commentaries to explain their images. Look out for Chevon’s work in the exhibit.
“The exhibition will run at BSoA until October 29.”
