A 71-year-old man arrested in connection with the theft of a smartphone from a motorcycle storage box has been released on police bail.

A police spokesperson said, “A 71-year-old man arrested in connection with the theft of a smartphone from a motorcycle storage box – while the motorcycle was left parked and unattended on Front Street in the City of Hamilton, near Burnaby Street around 12:40am Wednesday, November 27th – has been released on police bail, pending further inquiries by the Criminal Investigation Department.

“In light of recent thefts from unattended parked motorcycles where an unknown culprit or culprits have removed personal items from under motorcycle seats and inside storage boxes, the Bermuda Police Service reminds motorcyclists to take proactive steps to reduce the chances of opportunistic theft.

“Residents are advised to be vigilant about where they park their motorcycles – particularly overnight [well-lit areas are preferable] and it is strongly recommended that any valuable items be removed before leaving motorcycles parked and unattended.

“Parked motorcycles should be secured using the handlebar lock along with a secondary lock – and if the motorcycle has a storage box, it should also be secured before leaving the vehicle unattended.

“Members of the public are encouraged to report any suspicious individuals or activity around unattended parked motorcycles to the main police telephone number 295-0011 at the earliest opportunity – providing as much information as possible about the location and time of any suspicious behaviour, as well as a description of the suspect[s] involved, if possible.“
