BCAA Safety Audit Results In Top 5% Worldwide
Following a safety audit conducted by the International Civil Aviation Organization [ICAO] in May of this year, the Bermuda Civil Aviation Authority [BCAA] has been awarded an overall score that ranked as the 10th best score out of the 185 States audited to date.
“This score solidifies Bermuda’s excellent global reputation for high safety standards and a well-regulated Aircraft Registry,” the BCAA said.
“The ICAO is a UN specialized agency, established to manage the administration and governance of the Convention of International Civil Aviation. ICAO conducts audits of signatory States under its Universal Safety Oversight Audit Programme [USOAP].

“The audit took place in Bermuda from May 6th – 16th and consisted of a detailed review of BCAA’s safety oversight system. Of the possible eight areas to be audited, ICAO chose to audit Bermuda in the five areas related to operator safety oversight, namely; Legislation, Organization, Personnel Licensing, Operations and Airworthiness.”
BCAA’s Director General, Thomas Dunstan, commented, “The results are extremely important to the Authority and we are very proud of what has been achieved. A score of 95.2% for Effective Implementation [EI] of ICAO Standards and related Guidance Material for the areas audited in 2019 is an excellent result and will assist us on continuing to grow the registry.
“I would like to thank our whole team of staff who worked very hard to prepare for the audit over the past year.
“We also recognise that it is a special year for the ICAO as they celebrate 75 years since the signing of the Convention on International Civil Aviation. We congratulate them on this momentous occasion.”
In addition to the Bermuda Aircraft Registry, which is the world’s largest offshore registry, BCAA also has a responsibility for the safety oversight of all local aviation activity.
This includes Aerodrome, Air Traffic Management, certifying Bermuda based commercial air operators and safety surveillance of foreign airlines.
