Brian Madeiros Releases Book On Cancer
What began as a way to pass time in a hospital bed has become a published reflection on the realities of cancer and what one person wishes he had understood at the start.
“It’s a Curious Thing: My Cancer Experience – What I Wish I Knew,” written by Bermuda resident Brian Madeiros, was officially launched at Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre’s strategic team building day on 27 February 2026.”
In 2022, while undergoing treatment, Mr Madeiros found himself searching for a way to mentally step outside the experience. “I started writing what I can only describe as an invisible book in my head,” he says. “At the time, it was simply a distraction, something to focus on while everything else felt uncertain.”
What followed became a deeply personal reflection on the physical, mental and emotional impact of cancer and the unexpected ways in which that experience can shape perspective.
“I had no idea this would turn into a booklet,” Mr Madeiros says. “That wasn’t remotely on the agenda.”
A spokesperson said, “Over time, those reflections evolved into the foundation for the Cancer Conversation initiative, developed alongside Dr Chris Fosker in 2024. The initiative encourages open, honest discussion around the cancer experience, including the challenges that are often not spoken about.
“Encouraged by friends and family, Brian chose to publish his writing to share those insights more widely.
“The booklet highlights themes of uncertainty, resilience, and the importance of humour, humility and gratitude, while also reinforcing the role of early detection and awareness.”
“It’s not a medical guide,” he says. “It’s simply a shared experience. If it helps even one person feel more prepared, or less alone, then it’s done what I hoped it would do.”
The spokesperson said, “It’s a Curious Thing is available on Amazon as an e-booklet and paperback and can also be purchased through Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre website cancer.bm with part proceeds support the Centre’s mission.
