U.S. President Donald Trump Impeached

December 18, 2019

The U.S. House of Representatives has just voted in favour of both articles of impeachment, making Donald Trump the third president in American history to be impeached.

The vote went mostly along party lines, with Republicans voting against the measure, while most the Democrats — who hold a majority in the U.S. House — voted in favour of both articles of impeachment.

The 45th President was charged with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, with the charges tied to an alleged scheme aimed at luring Ukraine into interfering in the 2020 election.

“Specifically, Trump is accused of withholding $400 million in military aid and the prospect of an Oval Office visit from new Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to coerce him into announcing an investigation into Biden and his son Hunter’s business dealings in the country,” CNN reports.

The first vote, 230-197, was to impeach him for abuse of power, and it was followed by a second 229-198 vote that the President obstructed Congress

The impeachment of President Donald Trump is the third in US history and the fourth effort at doing so, following after the impeachment of Andrew Johnson in 1868, the impeachment of Bill Clinton in 1998, and the attempt to impeach Richard Nixon in 1974, with Nixon resigning before he could actually be impeached.

The matter will now move to the U.S. Senate, and various reports and pundits suggest that the U.S. President, infamous for his voracious use of Twitter, is unlikely to be removed from office, as the Republicans hold a majority in the Senate. The Senate trial on whether to remove the president will begin in early January.

The House action came as President Trump was speaking at campaign rally in Michigan this evening.

“After three years of sinister witch hunts, hoaxes, scams, tonight the House Democrats are trying to nullify the ballots of tens of millions of patriotic Americans,” President Trump said at the rally.
