Dr Butterfield Speaks At Saltus On Diversity
Saltus Grammar School said they were delighted to welcome Bermudian Dr. Vernée Butterfield back to Saltus at the beginning of 2020, with Dr. Butterfield working with the staff and faculty “on discussions revolving around diversity, inclusion, identity, and race.”
A spokesperson said, “We were delighted to welcome Dr. Vernée Butterfield back to Saltus at the beginning of 2020. Dr. Butterfield, who is Bermudian and currently living abroad has previously visited Saltus as guest speaker at our Founder’s Day [May 2019], has a PhD from Texas A&M with a Dissertation focusing on Urban African American Charter School Principals: Cultural Competence and Teacher Faculty Development.
“Among Dr. Butterfield’s research interests are Culturally Responsive Practices and Racial Equity and she has presented internationally on the topics of discriminatory educational tracking, curriculum theory and culture, and social justice leadership.
“To start off the new term, Dr. Butterfield worked with all staff and faculty at Saltus on discussions revolving around diversity, inclusion, identity, and race.
“She also spent a day with the students and facilitated discussions with our Senior Prefects, Gold Key Ambassadors, Student Council, and selected Year 10 advisories on questions revolving around identity and belonging. This is all part of our commitment to ensure that inclusivity and diversity are the centre-piece of the Saltus experience for our community.
“Saltus Cavendish also celebrated the idea of ‘diversity’ last week by wearing odd socks with their school uniform.
“The students did this to celebrate the cultural, intellectual and physical differences found in their environment. It was a wonderful opportunity for the students to celebrate their individuality and uniqueness.
“Dr. Butterfield will continue to work with staff, faculty, and students and will be returning to Saltus in April 2020.”
