Devonshire Colts and the Southampton Rangers are the Shield and Friendship Trophy Champions following the football matches on New Year’s Day.
Shield Final: Flanagan’s Onions 1 Devonshire Colts 4
Devonshire Colts picked up the first piece of silverware in 2020 when they defeated the Flanagan’s Onion’s 4 – 1 at the Somerset Cricket Club.
The Devonshire Colts took the lead in the 10th minute when Jahkeylo Burgess found the back of the net from close range. Jibri Salaam then doubled as the Devonshire Colts lead in the 29th minute, however the Flanagan’s Onions pulled a goal back on the stroke of half time when Jecoa Thomas scored, so the two teams went to the break with the score 2 – 1.
The Devonshire Colts then restored their two goal lead when Chermarl Henry scored, and then Senoj Mitchell converted an 81st minute penalty to earn the Devonshire Colts the 4 – 1 win.
Friendship Final: Devonshire Cougars 0 Southampton Rangers 1
After a scoreless first half, the lone goal of this Friendship Final came in stoppage time.
The match between the Southampton Rangers and Devonshire Cougars saw the first half end 0-0, and in the second half the match looked as if it was heading to extra time, however after the officials indicated 3 minutes of injury time, the Southampton Rangers won a corner, and Maquel Nisbett-Tankard rose the highest to head the winner for Southampton Rangers.
