NMB Launches ‘Book Of The Month’ Programme
The National Museum of Bermuda [NMB] has launched a ‘Book of the Month’ programme, aiming to “inspire people in Bermuda and abroad to learn more about Bermuda’s history, cultural heritage, and the history of the Atlantic world.”
A spokesperson said, “Education is central to NMB’s mandate, with formal and informal learning, and research and scholarship being key components of the Museum’s work.
“As an institution that encourages and supports the open exploration of history, the NMB hopes that the Book of the Month initiative will inspire people in Bermuda and abroad to learn more about Bermuda’s history, cultural heritage, and the history of the Atlantic world.
“This month’s book recommendation is Cyril Packwood’s Chained on the Rock, a groundbreaking book first published in 1975 that documents the history of slavery in Bermuda from its inception until Emancipation. NMB Press republished a revised edition of Chained on the Rock in 2012, edited by C.F.E. Hollis Hallett.”
NMB Executive Director Elena Strong said, “There exist numerous key texts written by local and international authors about Bermuda history and the Atlantic World, but we are thrilled to see more and more interest and scholarship around these topics lately.
“NMB is excited to share our monthly book recommendations which we hope spark curiosity, debate, and a better understanding of our collective history.”
The spokesperson said, “NMB members who purchase Chained on the Rock at The Bookmart at Brown & Co. will receive a 10% discount when they present their membership card. The publication can also be purchased at the Museum, at other local bookstores, and found at the Bermuda National Library, Bermuda Archives, and Bermuda College Library.
