Relay For Life To Kick Off On February 4
Liberty Specialty Markets Bermuda – presenting sponsor of the Relay For Life of Bermuda for the seventh consecutive year – is inviting the public take part in the Parish Luminaria Challenge and learn more about the event at the February 4th kick off.
Steve Horton, President of Liberty Specialty Markets Bermuda, said, “Relay for Life of Bermuda has been an enormous success and in the past six years, raising over $4.5 million. These funds lead to the successful opening of a radiation facility at Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre of which Relay For Life donated $2.2 million towards the $10 million capital campaign.
“In recent years, over $2.3 million was raised supporting the Centre’s equal access fund enabling all members of our community access the Centre’s full range of prevention programmes, early cancer detection services and radiation therapy treatment, without a co-pay.”
A spokesperson said, “The Liberty Specialty Markets Relay season officially kicks off on February 4, 2020, at City Hall. During the day, there will be tents and volunteers on hand to answer questions about participating in Relay. Whether you are thinking of entering a team, becoming a sponsor, entertainer, volunteering your time, or as an honoured carer or survivor, there is a role for everyone.
“At 5:30 pm on February 4, as dusk approaches, luminaria bags will light up the grounds of City Hall marking the start of the Kick Off Ceremony. Everyone is encouraged to attend.
“We are very proud to continue our lead sponsorship of Relay For Life of Bermuda. Our access to the vast size of Liberty Mutual provides great depth to what we can offer our clients, but we have not lost our community focus on what matters in Bermuda. It’s our commitment to support the battle against cancer and find ways to make a difference” states Horton.
“According to Ms Titterton Narraway, since 2014 Liberty Specialty Markets Bermuda has donated over $618,488 of funding to Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre through corporate sponsorship and their annual employee participation in the Relay For Life campaign.
“The Bermuda Relay event, held in May every year [May 15-16, 2020] at the North Field, National Sports Centre, is the Island’s largest annual fundraiser, attracting more than 5,000 people each year and raising over $4.5 million since it began. 97% of funds raised through Relay support the local event’s mission to raise awareness and funds to promote access to cancer prevention, early detection, treatment and support provided by Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre; and 3% supports the American Cancer Society’s Global Relay For Life, life-saving research and programmes around the world.
“Relay For Lifes are overnight events, with teams camping out around a track. Each Relay begins with an inspirational opening ceremony, followed by cancer survivors taking the first lap around a track while other participants cheer them on. All Relay participants then start walking around the track.
“After dark, Relay events feature a solemn luminary ceremony with hundreds of lighted candles to honour cancer survivors and remember those who have lost their battles with the disease. Relays end with a closing ceremony the next day.
