January 6, 2020

Thirteen people were arrested for impaired driving from Thursday evening [Dec 26] until Wednesday evening [Jan 1].

A police spokesperson said, “A total of 13 motorists were arrested on suspicion of impaired driving from the evening of Thursday, December 26th 2019 [Boxing Day] until the evening of Wednesday, January 1st 2020 [New Year’s Day] as road sobriety checkpoints were conducted in seven parishes [Hamilton parish, Smith’s parish, Devonshire, Pembroke, Paget, Warwick and Southampton] during the period.

“In addition, one person was arrested for possession of a bladed article and five individuals were arrested on outstanding warrants at the checkpoints.

“While there are no road sobriety checkpoints scheduled for this coming weekend, members of the public are urged not to drive or ride under the influence as police officers conducting their regular patrols will be on the lookout for any offences, including impaired driving.”

I see that Bermuda still isn’t serious about dealing with people driving under the influence of alcohol… stop points in 7 parishes for about a week and only 13 persons were caught. Right…

You do know that the police are always on the lookout for people DUI whether there’s advertised checkpoints or not ?
I just wish that they’d do something about the total lawlessness we all see 24 hours a day that has zero to do with DUI
There’s no way these people can all be under the influence that are having these crashes 24 hours a day . And that’s EVERYONE in every type of vehicle .

You’re still defending drunks I see, the cops have gone to great lengths to emphasize that they are NOT trying to arrest drunk drivers, made plainly obvious by an unexplained 3 month hiatus coinciding with the Rugby tournament and no checks on the weekend prior to christmas, or christmas day. You do realize some alcoholics drink at all times of the day, including early morning don’t you? Are you aware that booze makes bad drivers exponentially worse and more dangerous? The cops use sneaky speed traps , why not post up outside bars and monitor who is driving and riding home while drunk. The allowable amount of 0.8 should be dropped for zero tolerance and itemized full statistics need to be publicized.

I do not and never will defend drunk driving.
But do you honestly believe that everyone you see on the roads at all hours that are driving like out of control idiots are all , or even have been , drinking ? Do you not believe that it is actually them who are responsible for the vast majority of crashes and taking out other innocent victims ?
Another thing we also have to get over is the belief that DUI only means alcohol. I know you and a lot of others don’t like it but it means ALL mind altering substances.
Believe me , I’m terrified of drunk drivers but on another note I’m equally aware that someone coming towards me in the opposite lane could also have a seizure or stroke. Being on the roads is no fun at all. Especially when you’re a sitting duck on a bike .

But yet there would be so much moaning and groaning if the Police stopped every vehicle and breathalysed every driver, wouldn’t there? You can’t have it both ways.

    • puzzled says:

      What a stupid statement D.Kerr.
