Berkeley Students Attend BILTIR Lunch & Learn
Ten students from the Berkeley Institute learned about the wide range of career opportunities open to them in the life re/insurance sector at a lunch and learn session organised by Bermuda International Long Term Insurers and Reinsurers [BILTIR].
Scott Selkirk of Somerset Re explained the role that life re/insurance plays in the global economy and the work carried out by BILTIR. BILTIR represents 61 long-term insurance, reinsurance and servicing companies in Bermuda who provide life and annuity products and employ 540 people on the island. At the end of 2018, assets managed by the long-term industry in Bermuda reached nearly $500 billion – a large majority of them managed by BILTIR members.
Paolo Fiandesio, who also works at Somerset Re, told the event held at the offices of Global Atlantic Re in Hamilton about the role of risk management in business, while Kiara Somner of Global Atlantic Re gave insights into operational management. Scott Silverman of Prosperity talked about some of the legal aspects of the industry, and Sheetal Chhiba of EY explained the role actuarial scientists play in the re/insurance industry.
“The lunch and learn series is just one of the many popular community service programmes that BILTIR members support,” said BILTIR Executive Director Ronnie Klein. “Our goal is to provide a pipeline of new local talent to feed the long-term sectors growing business in Bermuda.”
In January, BILTIR invited island students to apply for 10 week paid-for summer internship with BILTIR company. Students can apply for the progamme through the BILTIR website www.biltir.bm.
