OBA: ‘Few Solutions To Resuscitate Economy’

February 21, 2020

“Government missed its revenue targets, it overspent, failed in its promise to produce a budget surplus and is now projecting a budget deficit,” the OBA said today.

“They boasted loudly about a projected $7m surplus but somehow oversaw a $14m deficit,” said Shadow Finance Minister Pat Gordon-Pamplin, who just took over the Shadow Ministry after Nick Kempe stepped down.

“In addition, Government is now forecasting an almost $20m deficit this year, further adding to our unsustainable debt,” Ms Gordon-Pamplin added.

“They are planning to increase capital expenditure by $20m. The OBA has no problem on spending on capital projects, but we do not think the money should be borrowed unless there are returns that justify the borrowing.

“Instead of reining in capital spending to help balance the budget, they actually overspent. There are also line items such as a $20m increase in professional services. There were opportunities to balance the budget, but they were ignored.

“The Minister accused the OBA over falsehoods regarding an increase in the number of civil servants, but it has increased, and the figures show it.

“In 2016/17, the actual number of Government employees was 4,707, 2017/18 it was 4,764, for 2018/19 the number is 4,806, for 2019/20 it is 4,942 and for 2020/21 they are forecasting 5,076 employees.

“Overall, there were few solutions to resuscitate our ailing economy, nothing was mentioned to help retail The Minister blames retail for being antiquated and tells them to modernise but Government itself has not modernised and simply hires more people to try and solve problems.

“People are becoming angry, people wanted to hear a budget that gave them hope, that would stimulate the economy and create jobs.

“All this budget shows they have no idea how to stimulate the economy and improve the lives of Bermudians.”

This budget is as good as can be expected , the plp simply cant do this job they have failed milestone after milestone yet the flock continues to vote them in. Desilva attacks the only agency somewhat attached to government that has shown promise. Why one asks …its called control …the plp only know one way of management “control and micro manage ,,,the stumbling block not a good manager amongst all 25 of them Bermuda wake up 1n 1998 we started at the top of Knapton hill today I see the stop sign at the bottom …when will the flock open their eyes and hit the brakes

    • sandgrownan says:

Well, they are driven by religious authoritarians so it really should come as no surprise.

    • LOL says:

It’s because of people like you the oba UbP uses surrogates to help with elections.

    • Ben says:

Maybe that’s because “the flock” has come to accept which party is the lesser of two evils.

      • Toodle-oo says:

Maybe it’s because the ‘flock’ would rather hold their nose and take it up the wazoo than succeed with a group that doesn’t look like them ?

      • Sandgrownan says:

Really? How is this on anyway better? Oh yeah, race. Silly me.

  2. Unbelievable says:

The PLP have no ideas. Their supporters have to take them to task.

    • Ben says:

I get the feeling your notion of a “good idea” involves a significant decrease in a certain segment of Bermuda’s population.

  3. sandgrownan says:

In before the green machine, but these facts are key:

Government missed its revenue targets, it overspent, failed in its promise to produce a budget surplus and is now projecting a budget deficit, they boasted loudly about a projected $7m surplus but somehow oversaw a $14m deficit,”

20 years of PLP failure and deceit.

    • Hmmmm says:

and 50 plus years of a racist UBP now aka OBA to escape its racial past.

      • Question says:

So, no answer to the comment about the budget then. Just another PLP comment on how ‘some people are bad’.

      • Sandgrownan says:

Ah, so rather than address the failure, distract. Idiot.

        PLP failure.

        • Tre says:

Instead of you trying to correct the wrongs of your racial party …you change the name and continue to place surrogates as front men and women. Don’t worry a third party will be created then we can all stand together and hug. The former BDA party should never have merged with the UBP to form oba.

  4. Great job, Curtis Dickinson. You have worked hard and your budget information is balanced. Most importantly, Bermudians will get relief, something which bloggers could give a damn about. The employment piece…. FABULOUS!
    Good job, Curtis!!

    • Sandgrownan says:

Curtis is sinking with Dilbert. No idea, no clue. Capital, intellectual and cash, is happening daily you dumb ^$$%(

      • Hmmmm says:

Curtis has more brain power in his pinky toe then your Jetgate oba leader Craig and Nick left you just like Jeff Baron. Why is it that all your best people continue to leave you??? Craig is not going to help you attract the voters you need idiots and having him as leader just shows how desperate the party has become. A kingdom never place’s the court jester in charge.

        • Sandgrownan says:

Well he needs to use it then rather than being a cog. Stupid, incompetent budget.

        • Onion Juice says:

Looking at Curtis’s resume, he runs circles around ya makeshift party.

        • saud says:

You’d have a better point if you knew how to express yourself. All I’m seeing is a product of Bermudas educational system. Ignorant, hateful and spiteful. Absolutely no understanding of how an economy works and a racist, xenophobic attitude.
          Sad…but expected.

By the way, good people leave, because they can…those of you who stay…by your own admission, aren’t any good.

      • Sad says:

The UBP is strong is this one. Simply put you do the opposition no favors by blogging with your angry rants.

    • Chris says:

You clearly have NO IDEA how economies work. Bermuda relies on capital coming IN. Where do u think the PLP is going to find the money?

  5. Vortex says:

Where are ideas to repopulate the island?

This Government has its head in the sand.

We need incentives to get job creators here, and more importantly retain those we have.

    How many times??…
