Flora Duffy On Postponement Of Olympics
Bermudian triathlete Flora Duffy says that “it is a tough pill to swallow” hearing the Olympic Games will be postponed due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, but said “given the current situation in the world, it is the right call” and urged everyone to ”stay inside and do your part to stop the spread.”
In an online post, Ms Duffy said, “In my little triathlon world, it is a tough pill to swallow hearing the Tokyo 2020 Games will be postponed until 2021.
“Everything has been geared towards that race, I’d envisioned a very different 2021, but given the current situation in the world, it is the right call, and sport / prioritizing training at the moment feels trivial.
“Sending my thoughts to anyone Covid 19 positive. And encouraging everyone else to stay inside and do your part to stop the spread.”
In announcing the Olympics will be postponed, the IOC said, “The IOC President and the Prime Minister of Japan have concluded that the Games of the XXXII Olympiad in Tokyo must be rescheduled to a date beyond 2020 but not later than summer 2021, to safeguard the health of the athletes, everybody involved in the Olympic Games and the international community.
The Olympics and Paralympics are the biggest international sporting events to be postponed due to the pandemic, but international sports worldwide have ground to a halt, and so have ours.
Bermuda’s local sports leagues have suspended competition and our planned international events — such as the Carifta Games, World Series Triathlon, Jet Suit Race, Squash Open, and Newport Bermuda Yacht Race — have all been postponed and/or cancelled.
