Round The Island Power Boat Race Cancelled

June 16, 2020

The Bermuda Powerboat Association [BPBA] announced that the 2020 Annual Round the Island Power Boat Race has been cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

BPBA Commodore Robert Cardwell said, “We have today announced to our membership that due to the Covid-19 pandemic we are forced to cancel the 2020 Annual Round the Island Power Boat race.

“As Commodore and in consultation with the Executive Team in the BPBA we have to make this very difficult decision but feel it is the right decision. The Round the Island Power Boat race has consistently been held and scheduled for the first Sunday after Cup Match since 1955. It has never been cancelled.

“As it the case with all other sporting bodies we remain dormant for the 2020 Power Boat Race Season and our teams are both disappointed but understand the position we are in as a responsible body.

“The BPBA applaud the Government for their transparency and open communication as collectively we navigate our way through the Covid-19 pandemic in the safest possible way and we wish everyone well.”

  1. Hair says:

But you can have a 7000 people march! SMH

    • Now Ya Nice says:

The Commodore never said that the Government forced them not to hold the event. It’s says the executive committee made the decision! I could be because they don’t feel that the will have enough pre race dates for the drivers to test, could be lack of interest from Sponsors, lack of interest from racers, health concerns ort almost anything else. Where did you read the government said they couldn’t?!

  2. WTF says:

No Powerboat racing? WTF? This is getting a little ridiculous as if we can have 7,000 marchers why can’t we have 2 guys isolated in their own boats?

    • Now Ya Nice says:

Where does it say that government said they couldn’t. It says the executive committee decided to cancel.

  3. wahoo says:

I thought the whole point of a race was to create distance which fits in perfectly with social distancing…..

  4. Imjustsaying says:

Did they even try and work it out to have it?

  5. Now More Than Ever says:

We actually need a significant community event that can bring us all together.
We need now more than ever. Canceling everything simply exacerbates peoples loneliness and feeling of loss.
You would think that this might be very apparent to all.

  6. BERR says:

Makes ZERO sense, just suck more life out of all of us…..

  7. Triangle Drifter says:

Good grief! Who makes these decisions? It is all getting pretty ridiculous.

Motives for some of these rules & forced cancelled events are questionable.

  8. PANGAEA says:

It is all about C19 RISK.

    Life is not fair.

We just lost 9 wonerfiull people.
