Berkeley Institute To Celebrate 123rd Anniversary

The Berkeley Institute and The Berkeley Educational Society will be celebrating the school’s 123rd Anniversary on Sunday, September 6th, with a special ‘Drive by Greeting or Choose to Stay A While’ event, all designed to celebrate while observing Covid precautions.

A spokesperson said, “The opening of The Berkeley Institute took place on September 6, 1897. On Sunday, September 6, 2020, from 1pm to 4pm, The Berkeley Institute and The Berkeley Educational Society celebrates the school’s 123rd Anniversary. This year is unique as we aim to continue our yearly celebrations while being aware of the pandemic crisis and by observing Covid precautions.

“In that regard this year Alumni and Friends of The Berkeley Institute are invited to join host Lynwood ‘Brotha Richie’ at the Front Entrance of the new campus as we celebrate with a Drive by Greeting or choose to Stay A While.

“For those who Stay A While as well as those who choose a Drive By Greeting; entertainment, a light meal, a Berkeley Memento, and a free raffle ticket are included in the price of 1 for $23. On that day we invite alumni to also represent Berkeley’s history and legacy by also wearing something GREEN or GOLD, the school colours.

“The Berkeley Institute’s 123rd Anniversary Celebration promises to be a very entertaining afternoon. Stay A While guests are invited to bring a chair and wear their masks as they reunite with school friends and are entertained with a variety of music played by Brotha Richie as well as special performances at 1pm, 2pm and 3pm by Tylasha DeSilva, EC Connection [Elton and Cordell], Johnny Woolridge, Aisha Trott, Amoti Nyabongo and others. Impromptu performances from other Alumni and Friends are also encouraged.

“Tickets can be purchased at the gate for Drive By and Stay A While or in advance from Committee members. Raffle Prizes will be drawn at the end of the day and winners notified. All Covid protocols will be in place.”
