Videos: Bermuda Championship First Round
[Written by Don Burgess]
American Peter Malnati leads by one stroke at the PGA Bermuda Championship after the first round at Port Royal. Malnati shot eight under par with nine birdies and boogie on #17. Doug Ghim and Ryan Armour are tied for second after carding 64s. Both players had seven birdies.
There is a three-way tie for fourth with Doc Redman, Vaughn Taylor, and Chase Seiffert all at -6, 65.
Last year’s winner, Brendon Todd, was even for the first round. A total of 80 out of the 132 players were under par for the day.
Bermudians Camiko Smith, Michael Sims, and Anthony Phipps had mixed results this afternoon. Smith was solid and finished on par while Sims was two over, and Phipps was +5.
Perhaps the most unfortunate shot of the first round was by Puerto Rico’s Rafael Campos. Teeing off on the signature 16th, Campos’ ball went way off the fairway, took an unfortunate bounce, and ended up underneath a barbecue grill as a chef was cooking. He almost saved par on his third shot, but his ball hit the pin for an easy putt on his fourth shot.
