The surveillance radar system is undergoing planned maintenance, which is being carried out by an FAA team, assisted by technicians from the Airport Authority.
A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Airport Authority responsible for providing air navigation services at the LF Wade International Airport, including Air Traffic Control and Air Traffic Engineering, said the surveillance radar system is undergoing planned maintenance.
“Located on Southside, adjacent to the air traffic control tower, the radar system is owned by the US Federal Aviation Administration [FAA] and operated and maintained by the Bermuda Airport Authority. The planned maintenance is being carried out by an FAA team, assisted by technicians from the Airport Authority.
“The radar system is used by the FAA, from its control center on Long Island, NY, to provide enroute radar control within a 180 mile radius of the island, and to provide an approach and departure control service for Bermuda.
“Whilst the radar system is out of service FAA controllers will provide procedural control to ensure aircraft separation, and aircraft operating into and out of Bermuda will be guided by published GPS-based arrival and departure procedures.
“The radar system maintenance work is expected to be completed by the end of October.”
