Video & Results: World Tens Round 2, Day 1

November 3, 2020

The first day of the second round of the Rugby World Tens Series was held on Monday at the National Sports Centre.

The day’s match report said, “Day one of Round two of the World Tens Series had a bit of everything; wind, rain, tries, 5-point conversions, but unfortunately no SX10.

“The side from Cape Town were awaiting their COVID-19 test results all day, but unfortunately, they did not return in time. We look forward to seeing the team at the National Stadium tomorrow morning.

“Asia Pacific Dragons turned up the heat with some scintillating rugby, making up for a rather disappointing first round display. The APDs won both their matches to edge their way up the league table and put themselves in contention heading into day two.

“Miami Sun caused an upset in the opening game, producing a determined performance to beat the London Royals 15-11. Tries from Tuamoheloa and Tani and a five-point conversion from James Stokes saw the US based team get off to the perfect start.

“Phoenix were at full strength today but came up against a formidable APDs side in their first game. Tries from Alosio, Gouws, Schoeman and Saunitoga ensured a bonus point win. Tommy bell booted a five-point conversion to make it 27-5.

“The Aviators and Rhinos met in the closest contest of the day in a ding-dong battle. The Rhinos, leading the league coming into the round, scored two quick tries through Naposki and Winnaar to take an early lead. The Aviators responded with a Brad Tucker try on the stroke of half time to bring themselves back into it, but had to wait until the final minutes to secure the win, JP Smith crashing over to the jubilation of the Aviators bench.

“The Aviators kicked off the second session with a bonus point win against Phoenix, before London Royals gained revenge over Rhinos for the last-minute defeat last week to get up 12-0 this afternoon. Tom Emery crossed against the run of play before Rich de Carpentier secured the win.

“In a low scoring contest Phoenix got their first win in the World Tens Series prevailing 5-0 against Miami. Lewis Berg scoring with three minutes to go when the match looked destined to be the first penalty shoot-out in World Tens Series history.

“The APDs and Ohio Aviators saved the best contest until last. Two physical sides went head to head in a bruising encounter that saw both sides go over for three tries. Tommy Bell however kicked his second five-point conversion of the day to give the Dragons their second win and remain unbeaten.

“The London Royals top the table on 24 points, closely followed by the Asia Pacific Dragons on 23. Rhinos and the Aviators are on 20 with Miami Sun on 14 and Phoenix on six points.”
