All Night-Time Events In Govt Facilities Cancelled

March 9, 2021

“Effective immediately, all night-time events in government facilities, parks and beaches are cancelled until further notice,” the Government has confirmed.

This follows after the police attended the Horticultural Hall at the Botanical Gardens on Friday night [March 5] after receiving reports that a large party was taking place, and according to the police “there were in excess of 100 persons at the event” and “no one was wearing masks and there was no social distancing.”

“The organiser of the event could not be located among the crowd and no one was willing to assist police with their inquiries. However, the details of several vehicles which began leaving the scene as police arrived, were recorded,” the police previously said.

A Government spokesperson said, “The Department of Parks issued a special permit to an individual to hold what was listed as a birthday party of fewer than 25 persons in attendance at this location, in keeping with the current public health regulations.

“The Department has no authority to issue permits or exemptions from COVID-19 regulations. Applicants who wish to hold events with more than 25 persons must first apply for and receive an exemption from the Ministry of National Security. That approval must be submitted with the permit request for the event to the Department of Parks.

“The Department can confirm that the application for this event was not accompanied by an exemption granted by the Ministry of National Security. In keeping with the Department’s operational policy, a staff member opens and closes the facility, but they do not remain on-site to monitor the event.

“The need to promote the safe use of Parks’ facilities, especially in light of the ongoing challenges of the pandemic presents the ideal opportunity to re-examine our policies.

“Therefore, effective immediately, all night-time events in government facilities, parks and beaches are cancelled until further notice. Day time events for gatherings larger than 25 persons will continue provided there is the written approval from the Ministry of National Security, which will include all necessary guidelines as per the Department of Health.”

“The Department of Parks is assisting the Bermuda Police Service with their enquiries.”

  6. Jack Rhind says:

I’m confused. Did Government rent out the space for an event? If so, then they know who the organizer is. If they did not rent out the space then why are they cancelling all usage of the property?

Yes, the PLP Government knows who rented the facility. It is obviously not someone with “historic wealth” or that person would be named and shamed.

  7. Gary E Wilson says:

Why were not checks carried out, earlier, to ensure compliance,,,,say 6pm 8pm , 9:30…a short distance from the city, three or four minute drive. where temps taken or required and logged ?

Yes, a Minister gives the good news and an unnamed Government spokesperson gives the news the electorate (or core PLP supporters) will not like. Cowards.

COVID – not clear on your comment about why everyone hates government and police? Everyone knows what the rules are, the government sets them and police enforce them. You choose to ignore them, then you get what you get….and everyone else now gets penalized because of a few selfish ignorant individuals – thanks very much you 100 people – I hope you had a lot of fun and don’t feel too guilty that you are going to be the cause of another lockdown – good work!
