Appeal For Donations For Vaccination Clinic

March 26, 2021

Noting the costs incurred to administer vaccines, the Bermuda Hospitals Charitable Foundation is appealing for individuals and businesses to “help cover the balance of funds totalling $222,000 needed by BHB’s Vaccination Clinic.”

A Bermuda Hospitals Charitable Foundation spokesperson said, “Vaccinating as many Bermudians and residents as possible is a National priority for personal and island immunity. The Bermuda Hospitals Board [BHB] is in need of donations to help fund the operating costs of running the BHB Covid Vaccination Clinic.

“While the vaccines are at no cost to individuals, there are costs for the nurses, administrators and equipment needed to handle patient intake and administer shots which are now over $800,000 and projected to total $1,000,000 to BHB as the Clinic continues to operate towards completing the 10-week program.

“The Covid -19 pandemic has put a monumental financial strain on the BHB and the Government of Bermuda. As the fundraising arm of BHB, the Bermuda Hospitals Charitable Foundation [BHCF] is grateful to donor support thus far and is asking individuals, families and businesses to help cover the balance of funds totalling $222,000 needed by BHB’s Vaccination Clinic.

“BHB began their vaccination program for their 1800 employees as soon as the Pfizer-BioNtech vaccine was available on Island. Doctors, nurses, essential staff of the BHB and all frontline workers were vaccinated at the BHB Covid Vaccination Clinic. Soon after the Dept of Health asked the BHB to the open their Vaccination Clinic to the public replacing the makeshift Vaccination Clinic at the Police Club.

“BHCF are appealing for Bermuda to step up and giveand give generously to keep the BHB Covid Vaccination Clinic up and running to benefit all of Bermuda.”

Something is missing here. BHB is funded by Government and staff are paid for their work. Due to Covid many of the hospitals functions have been closed or reduced. Many of the people involved with the vaccinations are volunteers, and the staff are already paid so what are these extra costs? Government employees, including MPs, are receiving full pay, and only private sector workers are seeing reduced pay or nothing. $800,000 was “given” to Savvy Entertainment, and several hundred thousand a month rent given for a Government Department to move to to a building owned by an MP. Clearly there is Government money available, but clearly not for the right purposes. Count me out on this appeal.
