Rotary Donates Laptops For Foster Children

March 25, 2021

In an effort to help foster children participate in online classes, the Pembroke Rotary Club donated 14 laptops, which were turned over to the Department of Child and Family Services for onward distribution.

A spokesperson said, “The Pembroke Rotary, the Department of Child and Family Services [DCFS], and the Foster Parent’s Association have, for many years, worked together to support foster children.

“In past years, as children were preparing to return to school, the Pembroke Rotary Club worked together with donors and supporters to purchase school supplies and backpacks. The school supplies were carefully arranged to fill the backpacks and then turned over to the Foster Parent’s Association for distribution to foster children who needed the support.

“The 2020/2021 school year was completely changed by the Covid pandemic. After discussions with DCFS and the Association, the Club decided that since children were unlikely to return to school anytime soon, they didn’t really need backpacks full of school supplies. What children did need, however, were laptop computers so they could participate in online classes.

“This led the Club on a quest for community partners and for laptops that would meet the needs of foster children who were distance-learning. The Pembroke Rotary Club was fortunate enough to find both appropriate laptops and willing partners.

“Kevin DaCosta and his team at Mobile Tech searched far and wide to identify the perfect laptop for remote learning that balanced both quality and price.

“Fidelity was a wonderful partner who offered both financial support as well as IT support from Read Currelly and Clive Francis.

“Finally, the Pembroke Rotary Club, its Members and numerous friends of the Club worked together with Rotary International to raise funds to contribute to the project.

“Finally, after all the searching and fundraising was complete, the Pembroke Rotary Club was pleased to turn over 14 laptops to Selena Simons from the Department of Child and Family Services for onward distribution to those foster children who were in the greatest need.”
