Masterworks Encourages Charman Prize Entries

April 14, 2021

Masterworks is encouraging all artists – “local and resident, newcomers and professionals” – to participate in the 10th Biennial Charman Prize.

A spokesperson said, “Since 2008, Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art has hosted the Charman Prize, an art competition created to support local and resident arists. 2021 marks the 10th Biennial Charman Prize and Masterworks is encouraging all artists, local and resident, newcomers and professionals, to participate in this milestone exhibition.

“In effort to recognise the tumultuous year that the community has had and encourage artists to find creativity amongst all the change, the theme for this year’s Charman Prize is ’Bermuda, Our Island, in a Changing World.’ Masterworks welcomes submissions of all abilities, across all techniques and mediums, about, and inspired by our island.

“The Charman Prize was established and continues to be generously sponsored by local businessman and art collector, Mr. John Charman.”

Director Risa Hunter said, “We are delighted to have Mr. Charman’s support as sponsor and patron for this milestone event. At Masterworks, we believe that championing Bermuda artists is critical to our arts community and with the Charman Prize, we not only provide financial support for artists, but we also celebrate the diverse talents on our island.”

The spokesperson said, “This year, the entry form deadline is May 3, 2020. Due to Covid-19, Masterworks will only be accepting digital submissions, via email or the Masterworks website. The physical artwork deadline [pending Covid-19 restrictions] will be May 25, 2020, to ensure time for initial judging and photography for the exhibition catalogue.

“There are five prize categories, with the total prize money of $18,000. The categories are The Charman Prize $10,000, and additional prizes for Design & Composition $2000, Use of Material $2000, Distinctive and Convincing Style $2000, Inspiration $2000, and the Masterworks Collection Prize.”

Founder Tom Butterfield said, “Masterworks is proud to facilitate and participate in the Biennial Charman Prize, where every other year artists and the community eagerly await its arrival. This year’s title “Bermuda, Our Island, In a Changing World” hopes to capture the complexity of change over the past two years, both here locally and globally, as a result of Covid-19.

“The commitment by John to seek fairness, coupled with equal access to participation from all residents of Bermuda or Bermudians overseas, contributes to its success. We are greatly indebted to John’s generosity and vision, and it has been my personal privilege to work with John; his dedication, passion and devotion is joy itself. Thank you John for raising the bar.”

The spokesperson said, “To submit for the Charman prize, applicants must be above 18 years of age, and be Bermudian, or resident of Bermuda for longer than 6 months. Artwork requirements can be found in the application form.
