Jayden DeSilva Earns International Recognition

May 24, 2021

Jayden DeSilva, a 14-year-old Chatmore British International School, was recognized in the 2021 Student Achievement Awards by the Council of British International Schools [COBIS] for his “Significant Contribution to the Wider Life of the School”.

A spokesperson said, “In December 2020, when a 14-year-old Chatmore British International School student donated a $1000 shopping opportunity to his school, he had no idea how far a reach his generosity would have in the world.

“Jayden DeSilva, a Middle Years student at the Smith’s Parish school, was recognized in the 2021 Student Achievement Awards by the Council of British International Schools [COBIS] for his ‘Significant Contribution to the Wider Life of the School.’ He is now among a list of international students selected by the organization for their exceptional achievements.”

Alisa Sacofsky, the Student Engagement and Event Officer for COBIS noted that they had received nominations from close to 100 schools worldwide and expressed congratulations to Jayden, as a COBIS student, for his exceptional achievement.

Acting-Director of the Chatmore British International School Mrs. Britanni Butterworth shared her joy at receiving the message that Jayden had decided without hesitation to donate the funds to his school. Together they decided that they would use the funds to purchase materials and resources for all levels of the school to enjoy, and Jayden and his mom were together when the items were collected.

Mrs. Butterworth noted that for her “it was a rare occurrence to have a child genuinely sacrifice the opportunity to splurge on gifts for themselves at Christmas. I even asked him if he wanted to get something for himself on the day and he humbly declined the offer. This self-less act of kindness moved me to nominate Jayden. He exemplifies the kind of generosity that Chatmore values and is worthy of this recognition.”

In addition to COBIS, Jayden has received official congratulations from Fieldwork Education in the UK, the Chatmore Board of Governors, classmates, family, and friends in the Bermuda community.

In keeping with their focus on sustainability, rather than producing awards, COBIS have made a charitable donation to Cool Earth on behalf of the nominated students. Cool Earth is a charity that works alongside rainforest communities to halt deforestation and its impact on climate change.”
