June 28, 2021

The police confirmed that a suspect is in custody following a hit-and-run collision in Smiths which tragically claimed the life of 23-year-old Ra-Che Williams.

Police press conference held on Saturday [June 26]:

Chief Inspector Robert Cardwell, “We have confirmed that it was a two vehicle collision, however one of the vehicles had left the scene prior to our arrival.

“The injured party was Mr. Ra-Che Williams. He succumbed to his injuries shortly on arrival at the hospital yesterday. He was being tended to by area residents and then EMTs and unfortunately they weren’t successful.

“We reported this as a hit and run collision yesterday because it was a hit and run collision. I’m pleased to say today that we have now identified the other vehicle involved in that collision. That vehicle has been impounded and is being forensically examined right now. We’ve identified the driver and potential passenger of that vehicle, and the driver is currently in custody assisting us with inquiries.

“A good set of circumstances that led to the recovery of this vehicle. After being involved in the collision, it fled to a nearby neighborhood where it was laying low. The neighborhood was a neighborhood watch neighborhood, and it caught the attention of the area residents.

“The area residents engaged the people in the vehicle. They weren’t satisfied that they were up to any good, they did note the damage on the vehicle and they called it in to the police and we were able to follow up on that and secure the vehicle and secure the driver. So kudos to the area residents that helped us.”
