BIU President Chris Furbert On SAL Dispute
The parties involved in the SAL issue “remain at an impasse on one outstanding issue which they agreed the Labour Relations Section should refer to the Employment and Labour Relations Tribunal for resolution,” BIU President Chris Furbert said.
Mr Furbert said, “On Monday July 5th 2021 the Management of SAL trading limited, the Executives of the Bermuda Industrial Union and its members from SAL reached an agreement after a five day work stoppage caused by a Lock-out and downing of tools.
“The Management and Union agreed that the manager in question would be placed on administrative leave while an investigation is conducted around the complaint of alleged bullying and harassment made by the Union Members.
“The parties agreed that there would be no retaliation by the Company [SAL] against the Bermudian contract workers who came out in support of the unionized workers over those five days.
“Although the talks were amicable and the meeting ended on a positive note, the parties remain at an impasse on one outstanding issue which they agreed the Labour Relations Section should refer to the Employment and Labour Relations Tribunal for resolution.”
Is Chris serious?
Held hostage again.
“five day work stoppage caused by a Lock-out and downing of tools.”…ahhh no. it was more like the downing of tools that let to a lock-out” And the BIU feels that SAL should pay them a wage for NOT working? Isn’t one of the benefits of the union that should there be a strike, the union will provide financial support? If yes, why wont the BIU pay the workers? What are they doing with all the money they get from the membership?
So what issue are they still at an impasse on? As always we are given partial information. Why is the BIU so secretive?
