Downed Poles On Middle Road, Traffic Delays

July 21, 2021

[Updated with photos] BELCO crews are on scene working to repair damaged utility poles on Middle Road, Paget near Bostock Hill after a “tractor trailer became entangled in telecommunications cables” and ”two poles sustained damages with one falling into a residential property.”

A spokesperson said, “Bermuda Electric Light Company Limited [BELCO] today advised that work is currently taking place to repair damaged utility poles following an accident on Middle Road, Paget today and motorists can expect delays.

“At approximately 11 am today a tractor trailer became entangled in telecommunications cables on Middle Road, Paget near Bostock Hill. As a result, two poles sustained damages with one falling into a residential property. Members from BELCO’s Occupational Health Safety and Environment [OHSE] team have attended the area to ensure the safety of the public while repair works are underway.”

Shelly Leman, Managing Director of Transmission, Distribution and Retail said: “First and foremost our top priority in these situations is to ensure the safety of members of the public. I’m glad that there have been no reported injuries. It is unfortunate that a commercial vehicle hit telecommunications cables which resulted in damage to our infrastructure and a neighbouring home.

“Our crews are working as quickly and as safely as possible to replace the two broken poles and to reinstate all electricity lines. Crews are working alongside telecoms providers and as a result, motorists can expect delays on Middle Road into this evening until these works are completed.

“On behalf of our entire team, I’d like to apologise for this inconvenience and advise motorists to take an alternative route while repairs take place.”
