“Call For A General Strike Is Most Unfortunate”

August 22, 2021

The Government confirmed they received an “ultimatum letter” from the BIU President which said that if the Government ”refuses to make the necessary amendments” to the legislation they will be “calling on its membership for a two day shutdown” which will take effect August 30.

A Government spokesperson stated: “The Government of Bermuda can confirm that on August 19, 2021, the Premier of Bermuda received an ultimatum letter from the President of the Bermuda Industrial Union Chris Furbert.

“The letter stated:

“The BIU is giving the Bermuda Government eleven [11] days’ notice for the Minister of Labour to make certain amendments to Section 57: Cancellation of Certification under the Trade Union and Labour Relations [Consolidation] Act 2021 and if he refuses to make the necessary amendments the BIU’s General Council is calling on its membership for a two [2] day shutdown”

The two day shut will take effect August 30, 31 2021. The motion also includes that failure of the Government to make the necessary amendments to the 2021 Act then the Premier the Hon. David Burt and Minister of Labour, the Hon. Jason Hayward need to step down.

“The Government of Bermuda would like to make its position clear. The call for a General strike is most unfortunate and unnecessary,” a spokesperson said.

“The Government stands firm in its position that the Trade Union and Labour Relations [Consolidation] Act 2021 is fair and just. The Government has no intention of amending the legislation.”

  4. Red Pill says:

How about a general strike against the governments tyrannical behavior against the people of Bermuda with its quarantine mandates and coercing people/ That is a heck of a lot more important than some union certification. 8. Time to solve this says:

Just because the Union request that its members support a particular party des not mean they will get everything they want. Sorry. Let them call the General Strike. Folks do not get paid in this climate if they strike. They used to but no way the Government can continue this nonsense. Call the strike. When it fails the President of the Union will need to do what’s right: RESIGN. We have had enough of such tactics. If he does not support the PLp in the next election…if he is still there….so be it. Enough is enough.

  9. Otrwele says:

Funny how when the union takes action against the previous government it is some how just? but now when they want to take action against the current government they are wrong? Please!! This government needs to stop playing politics only when it suits them! Stop the double standards. This government is so arrogant they think that everything they do is right.

  18. Voice of the youth says:

In full support !! Ernie Burt & The Sesame Street Politricks need help

  19. moongate says:

How many of those folks protesting against the Union are Union members? Perhaps they are getting fed up with the lack of union benefits they should be receiving. Maybe they are now ‘seeing the light’ …… do tell ….

  20. Enough is Enough says:

The Union insisted non members pay dues for bargaining awards. Now said non members are entitled to a vote. It’s like a family paying a collective mortgage, just because one doesn’t reside in the home while the other do, doesn’t mean they are not entitled to have an opinion on the color the house will be painted. I pay,I have a say, point blank!
