Live Videos & Updates: BIU Members Gather

August 31, 2021

[Updating] Some members of the Bermuda Industrial Union [BIU] gathered at Union Square starting at 8.00am on Monday morning and the protest is expected to continue on Tuesday [Aug 31] and we will provide updates as able.

The BIU called for their non-essential members to gather for two days in protest of the latest legislation, which the Government has said they have “no intention” of amending, with the Government also stating that “as there is no labour dispute any action taken, including any proposed work stoppage or strike is unlawful.”

The issue the BIU is protesting is an aspect contained in the Trade Union & Labour Relations [Consolidation] Act 2021, and both the BIU and Government have released documents summarizing their position. The BIU’s 2-page document can be read here [PDF] and the Government’s 2-page document can be read here [PDF].

what a waste of time, another failure by the comrade Furbert

    • Mark says:

Where is Furbie’s lime green T-shirt?? Looks OBA red today!

  2. Ringmaster says:

So many breaches of the law and regulations yet nothing is done. Where are the police? An unlawful march blocking various streets including front street; large non exempted gathering, no social distancing/mask with w few exceptions. No wonder Bermuda has become an unlawful place.

    • dunn juice says:

      • lemon drop says:

sure is better than the tweeddle dee and oscar the grouch show Lord help us if the clown ever runs for a seat in the house

    • JohnBoy says:

      Bermuda is another world!

  3. MADDOG says:

Our economy is suffering, our children have been through significant change and challenge and this is not at all helpful. Do the right thing and just go back to work – stop being so single minded and following like sheep….ask your average joe union member what the issue is I wonder if they can actually tell you….? Why are we making mountains out of mole hills….don;t we have enough to worry about?

  4. Sandgrownan says:

Good to see the rabble rousing Genevieve being wheeled out again. Always good for a laugh that one.

  5. Tt says:

Soon even the most fortunate won’t be able to live in this country. From groceries to cost of hotel rooms etc affected one way or another by this nonsense. When does the celebration and defense of mediocrity stop?

    • Joe Bloggs says:

Don’t you understand, driving out the wealthy is the goal of some. They can then claim the property left behind and live the good life … just like what happened in Jamaica

      • JAYBIRD says:

You can drive out the wealthy and occupy their homes – but you still have to pay for electricity, gas, groceries etc which will be difficult when there are no jobs, no tourists, no international business and no natural resources. Bermuda truly is another world as there are very few other places in the world that have so little to offer to the rest of the world…

  6. Me says:

Only a few hundred back to work guys lot a nonsence

  7. Unbelievable says:

You lot see Zane DeSilva there talking to Chris Furbert? I’m willing to bet Burt is a marked man within the PLP ranks.

    • Ringmaster says:

Got to love that one. Zane’s company is one of the largest non unionized companies, and here he is talking with the head of the BIU about a matter, allegedly, concerning decertification. More proof of the real reasons for these marches?

      • dunn juice says:

wonder whos side the big zanes on, i mean port royal golf course is probably going to need more sand or another retrofit im sure.

  8. wahoo says:

Too many snouts in a trough that is running on empty.

  9. Dark star says:

Should have kicked tweed out of here when the country had the chance

  10. Observer says:

Over the years when the workers go on strike the different governments several times ended up paying them for the missed time anyway. If this was not done maybe the Unions would not be so quick to call their workers out.

  11. thelma foster says:

EVERY BODY WANTS TO BE CHIEF NO INDIANS

  12. number crush says:

if you look at the numbers it is a very poor representation of the union members that includes bus and ferryy. Very very small percent following the pied piper of noise and misinformation.

    • Joe Bloggs says:

Did you see how many boats were out on Monday and Tuesday? It looked like a weekend!

  13. Safekey says:

Did they have a safekey? Over 50 people, just asking?

  14. Unbelievable says:

Where was Chris Furbert when the PLP Government was bullying the POA? He was silent…No Solidarity here!
