Education Ministry Scholarship, Award Recipients

The Ministry of Education announced the recipients of the 2021 Bermuda Government Scholarships and Awards.

A Government spokesperson said, “Each year the Ministry of Education provides scholarships and awards to Bermudian students to pursue a higher education.

Minister of Education, the Hon. Diallo Rabain said, “I wish to commend our scholarship award recipients for their hard work, perseverance, and commitment to focusing on their goals.

“This year, the Ministry of Education is proud to show their continued support of our students by providing scholarships and awards with the same amount of funding as last year despite the economic challenges that the COVID-19 pandemic has placed on the Government.

“This government knows the importance education has on the future of individuals and our island. We will never stop assisting our students in reaching their goals and empowering them to achieve their dreams. We know that by consistently investing in our students now, we will reap the benefits well into the future. Thus, we are more than happy to provide continued support for our students.

“In addition to our scholarships and awards, the Bermuda College Promise Programme for students graduating from public schools with a 3.0 GPA, has allowed 73 students to date to attend the Bermuda College with free tuition. Since Fall 2019 when the programme started, 26 students enrolled in 2019, 47 enrolled in 2020, and we look forward to seeing our students continue to take advantage of this programme in Fall 2021.”

Minister Rabain extended his thanks to the Scholarships and Awards Committee members, and the Ministry and Department of Education public officers who have contributed towards the success of this scholarship and award season.

A spokesperson said, “The full listing of scholarships and awards provided are as follow:

“The Bermuda Government Scholarship for graduating senior school students or current college or university students [aged 16-25] for post-secondary education. This Scholarship has a value of up to $35,000 towards the cost of tuition and basic accommodation. Our 2021 recipients are:

  • 1. “McKenzie Kohl-Tuckett, is a 2021 graduate of Warwick Academy and is pursuing a LLB Law degree in Legal Studies at the University of Bristol.
  • 2. “Daria Symonds, is a 2021 graduate of The Berkeley Institute and is pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Biology at Howard University.

“The Teacher Education Scholarship for current college or university students with sophomore standing for study of selected subjects and/or areas of teaching need in the Bermuda Public School System. Must demonstrate financial need. Scholarship value is up to $20,000. Our 2021 recipients are:

  • 1. “Dawrae Gibbons, is a graduate of Saltus Grammar School and is currently studying at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore pursuing a Bachelor’s degree and Teacher Certification in English.
    • 2. “Mishael Paynter, is a graduate of The Berkeley Institute and is currently studying at Nottingham Trent University pursuing a Postgraduate Certificate in English.

“The Non-Traditional Student Award for the mature [aged 25 and over] college or university students pursuing post-secondary study. The Award value is up to $20,000. Our 2021 recipients are:

  • 1. “Tiffany Durham, is a graduate of the Bermuda College and is currently studying at Georgia State University, pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.
  • 2. “Paige Raynor, is a graduate of The Berkeley Institute and is currently studying at Barry University pursuing an Associate’s degree in Pre-Nursing.

“The Minister’s Achievement Scholarship was designed to help graduating students of CedarBridge Academy and The Berkeley Institute attend overseas post-secondary education. Scholarship value is up to $25,000 for overseas education. Our 2021 recipients are:

  • 1. “Egypt Cann, is a dual enrolment 2021 graduate of The Berkeley Institute and the Bermuda College. She graduated with an Associate of Arts degree in Business Administration from the Bermuda College. In the fall, she will enter her sophomore year at Temple University and will be pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration degree.
  • 2. “Jamin Fubler, is a dual enrolment 2021 graduate of CedarBridge Academy and the Bermuda College. He graduated with an Associate of Arts degree in Business Administration from the Bermuda College. In the fall, he will be attending Dalhousie University to pursue a Bachelor of Engineering degree.

“The Minister’s Exceptional Student Award for graduating students or school leavers with disabilities for local or overseas post-secondary study. The award is valued at up to $25,000 for overseas study and up to $5,000 for local study at the Bermuda College. Our 2021 recipients are:

  • 1. “Xela Swan, Overseas Award $25,00, currently attends the University of Nottingham where she is pursuing a Bachelor of Architecture degree with Honors. In the fall, she will enter her sophomore year. Xela is also a volunteer with PRIDE Bermuda.
  • 2. “Iziah Tucker, Local Award $5,000, is a 2020 graduate of The Berkeley Institute and is presently enrolled in the Bermuda College as a full-time student. In the fall, he will continue his Diploma in Culinary Arts at Bermuda College. Iziah has also completed the three levels of the Duke of Edinburgh Award–Bronze, Silver and Gold.
    • 3. “Deontae Armstrong, Local Award $5,000, is a 2021 graduate of CedarBridge Academy. He was also a dual enrolment student at the Bermuda College in the Hospitality Diploma Program. In the fall, he will continue his Diploma in Hospitality Management at the Bermuda College.

“The Minister’s Applied Science Scholarship is designed for public senior school students graduating from the Applied Technology Dual Enrolment Diploma Programme with the Bermuda College and who plan to continue their education there. Scholarship value is up to $5,000. Our 2021 recipients are:

  • 1. “Bryan Smith Hayward, is a 2021 graduate of CedarBridge Academy. He was also a dual enrolment student at the Bermuda College in the Applied Science [HVAC] program. In the fall, he will complete the final year of his Associate’s Degree in Applied Science [HVAC] at the Bermuda College.
  • 2. “Keyahjae Simons, is a 2021 graduate of The Berkeley Institute. He was also a dual enrolment student at the Bermuda College in the Motor Vehicle Technology program. In the fall, he will complete his Diploma in Motor Vehicle Technology at the Bermuda College.

“The Minister’s Technical and Vocational Award for graduating public school students or recent public school alumni [aged 25 or under] attending Bermuda College or overseas post-secondary study and is valued at up to $25,000 for overseas study. This year’s recipient is Kameyah Jones-Mussenden, who graduated from the Bermuda College in 2017 with an Associate of Science degree. From 2018 until present she has been working for the Bermuda Hospital Board. In the fall, she will be attending Winston-Salem State University to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in Clinical Laboratory Services.

“The Minister’s Bermuda College Book Award for Bermuda College students to purchase books. These are one-time awards for students enrolled in degree programmes at Bermuda College. The award value is $500. Our 2021 recipients are:

  • 1. “Selah Ray, is a 2021 graduate of CedarBridge Academy and will be attending the Bermuda College pursuing an Associate’s degree in Business Administration.
  • 2. “Quince’e Jones, is a 2021 graduate of CedarBridge Academy and will be attending the Bermuda College pursuing an Associate’s of Science degree in Education.
  • 3. “Aallayah Wolffee, is a 2021 graduate of CedarBridge Academy and will be attending the Bermuda College pursuing an Associate’s degree in Teacher Training.

“The Further Education Award is for current college or university students with sophomore standing for continued post-secondary study who must demonstrate financial need. This award value is up to $10,000 and this year there were a total of 54 Further Education Awardees as listed below:”
