July 24, 2023

The Bermuda Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, announced that Dayla Richards and D’wzjhane’ Smith are both recipients of the 2023 Dame Marjorie Bean Scholarship.

A spokesperson said, “Each student was awarded $1500 for use towards their scholastic endeavours. The Bermuda Alumnae Chapter awards the scholarship annually to a Bermudian female in a public high school who has demonstrated strong leadership skills, plays an active role in her school and community, and is fully committed to continuing her post-secondary studies.

“A recent graduate of The Berkeley Institute, Miss Richards will attend Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, to study Radiologic Technology. Having a keen interest in the sciences, she recognized that she wanted a career in diagnostic imaging in her third year of high school as she enjoyed studying human biology and learning the complexity of the body’s function.

“Miss Richards has been described as a team player, possessing good leadership skills, and a supporter of her fellow classmates. Aside from her academic pursuits, Miss Richards is an active volunteer at several community organizations, including a YPD President and Sunday School assistant at Mt. Zion AMEC, Communications Secretary for Bermuda YPD, and a Candy Striper at KEMH.

“A 2023 CedarBridge Academy graduate, Miss Smith will attend Bermuda College in the fall, focusing her studies on Accounting and Finance as she begins her journey to become a qualified accountant. She decided to take this career path due to her enjoyment of the fundamental analytical and numerical aspects of accounting. In the long term, she will look to pursue her Chartered Public Accountant [CPA] designation.

“As an enthusiastic, hardworking, active student on campus, Miss Smith is a reporter for the Student Government and part of the National Honours Society. She has volunteered her time for several community activities, including the Kappa Classics, Special Olympics, and the Rotary Interact Club.”

“The Bermuda Alumnae Chapter was impressed by all of the scholarship submissions,” remarked Ms. Shawnette Smith, President of the Bermuda Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

“We congratulate both Miss Richards and Miss Smith on being selected for this award. As a public service organization committed to the educational development of the communities we live in, providing the Dame Marjorie Bean Scholarship is one of the numerous ways we proudly give back to the community. We wish both Miss Richards and Miss Smith much success as they embark on the next step in their education goals.”
