Tributes Paid To Artist Dennis Joaquin

September 15, 2021

Tributes have been paid following the passing of Dennis Joaquin, with the art community noting he was a “creative talent” and “someone who had such a positive impact on our visual narratives as a country.”

An artist of extraordinary talent, Mr Joaquin was well known for the vibrant murals that graced the wall of his Warwick home, as well as for painting the Peaceful Art Protest mural in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Mr Joaquin describing one of his murals earlier this year:

Bermuda National Gallery [BNG] Executive Director Peter Lapsley said, “It is with great sadness that we learned of the untimely passing of Dennis Joaquin this past week. I had the pleasure of meeting and working with Dennis on the Peaceful Art Protest Mural Project, a collaboration between the Bermuda National Gallery and the City of Hamilton, which took place here in the city in 2020.

“To say that his passion for life and art was something we should all aspire to doesn’t fully capture who he was. Whilst I only knew him briefly, his was an energy that led me to think that we would have many more opportunities to work together, and I looked forward to those experiences to come.

“He was not only kind, committed and passionate about the many projects he was working on, but he was also a creative talent. It is very sad to learn of his passing, but the joy and art that he brought to the world will leave those who saw it a little brighter, and that is a truly special gift,” Mr Lapsley said.

Masterworks Museum also offered condolences on the passing of Dennis Joaquin, saying, “We are deeply saddened to hear of Dennis’ passing. Bermuda has lost a key voice within our arts community; someone who had such a positive impact on our visual narratives as a country.”

In speaking about his work on the Peaceful Art Protest mural, Mr Joaquin previously told the BNG he was honored to be a part of what he considered to be “an historical event of energetic change.”
